The John Muir Trust, the leading wild land conservation charity in the UK, has just reached a major milestone in its history, with 10,000 members now protecting the iconic wild lands in its care.
Ben Nevis and the wooded ravines of Glen Nevis; Bla Bheinn, the Red and part of the Black Cuillin on the Isle of Skye; Sandwood Bay near Cape Wrath, and the ‘mountain of mountains’, Ladhar Bheinn in Knoydart are among eight estates safeguarded by the Trust.
“We would like to thank each and every one of our members for helping us reach this important milestone,” said Stuart Brooks, Chief Executive for the John Muir Trust. “From humble origins our achievements - often in the face of considerable odds - are a tribute to the sheer commitment and determination of our members, volunteers and staff.”
The Trust was founded in 1983 to safeguard the future of wild lands against development and to promote recognition of the value of wild places.
The Trust works with communities, landowners and government to protect wild land, and encourages people of all ages and backgrounds to enjoy and care for wild places thought its educational initiative the John Muir Award.
Patron HRH the Prince of Wales formally gifted a commemorative certificate to the Brickell family, the John Muir Trust’s 10,000th member, while on a visit to the birthplace of John Muir in June 2009.
John Muir is the Scot internationally famous as a mountaineer, writer, inventor, campaigner, co-founder of the Sierra Club and Yosemite National Park, and pioneer of the modern conservation movement.
