Is there any advantage to fluorescent sheep?

We think it's a throw back to the 80s. After all, sheep are as prone to fads as anyone else.

There's been a lot of talk about how dangerous relying on using Cairns to navigate mountain routes can be, but imagine how much more dangerous it would be if you used sheep.

Sheeps' glow-in-the-dark properties make them perfect beacons at dusk. As the levels of ambient light from the sun drop, sheeps' coats re-radiate wavelengths from scattered ultraviolet, violet and blue light in the atmosphere, giving them the appearance of glowing.

Of course these aren't our words, we know absolutely nothing about fluorescent sheep. But two people that do can be found on the New Scientist website. This fluorescent effect, they say, occurs in flowers in order to attract insects, but they haven't been able to answer the crucial question - WHY would sheep want to glow?

Any bright ideas from the OUTDOORSmagic crowd?

I reckon it's just yet another way for them to differentiate themselves, give their industry a bit of a boost.

Alex, does Bob glow?

Glowing sheep are definitley a good thing - it might help stop me hitting them while bombing it back to Bangor from Snowdonia! I've never actually hit one - they'll take off the bumper or worse - but I've had some near misses.

PS driving fast in urban areas is very dumb. I would like to point that out - I think GATSOs are the best thing ever. I may drive fast on country roads round here but the only thing you'll hit is the sheep and I always slow right down for walkers, bikers and horses. Thankyou.

No Sal, Bob is an ordinary run of the mill, sheep about town with string legs and a loverley red bow-tie!

He does have a Hi-Viz Vest for riding his bike, but it is a bit useless as his legs keep bending when he tries to use the pedals.
