Why clean soft shell clothing?

If you have a breathable lined GoreTex garment, six months down the line, you’re relying on the breathable lining to keep you dry and comfortable. But if the face fabric is wetting out, the GoreTex won’t work as well, and you’ll be less comfortable, and maybe feeling damp inside your soft shell when it’s not even raining.

Again, ordinary detergents contain wetting agents that will turn your lovely gear into a magnet for raindrops, so you will need to use the right product.

The pure soap, no-detergent formula of Granger’s Extreme Cleaner Plus is perfect for a wash-in job, or you can spot-clean with Granger’s Extreme Clean Spray-On.

Proofing Soft shell fabrics vary, but as a rule, they won’t stand up to the temperatures that you need to activate the DWR. There’s a danger that the heat of a tumble drier could melt the fabric or break down any laminated breathable layers

Always read the label...
If you can tumble dry, use Granger’s XT, and tumble dry, paying special attention to the care label, in particular any dots inside the circle. (One dot means low heat only.) If tumble drying is out, spray with Granger’s Extreme Superpruf: this product doesn’t need heat to bond to the fibres.

Soft shell varies massively between manufacturers. Some garments will be machine washable, some will be hand-wash and some will be specialist clean only. Read the care instructions on your garment carefully and follow manufacturers instructions, but in all cases avoid washing powder, liquid detergent and fabric conditioner like the plague.
