Lakes Path Fixed - Before And After...

But is this really how we want our mountain paths to look?

Before...

This started off with a press release from the Lake District National Park Association. The gist of it was that a 30m landslide on the bridleway between Scarth Gap and Gatesgarth dating back to the November 2009 floods had been 'sympathetically repaired' using more than 100 tonnes of material from the bottom of the slip to repair the gap.

The result, and it cost £70,000 to achieve, is that walkers, mountain bikers and horses - it's a bridleway remember - no longer, in the words of the LDNPA 'have to struggle around the landslide'. Not only has the path been resurfaced, but slate from the nearby Honister Slate Mine was used to construct a storm drain to catches excess surface water and diverts it away to  prevent similar wash-outs happening in the future.

All of which sounds great on paper - in pixels? - and you can see how the track looked before the restoration work above, but click onto the next image to see how it looks now...

Picture 1 doesn't look very horse friendly - do horses care about the terrain - nor wheel friendly.
Should popular routes, as this appears to be, just be left to fall into disrepair for use only by one segment of the outdoor saudience or should they be managed for access by all?

a stair lift for for the elderly? toilets for the weak of bladder?

is that what you mean?

You mention it but I do think the newness is an issue there which is made worse by the new fence posts & wire. Only 30m? It'll no doubt blend in more over the next few years.
