Just off to the launch of the Kinder 80th anniversary celebrations - pause and think...
I'm just heading off out over to Edale for the launch of Kinder 80, the celebrations of the 80th anniversary of the Kinder Trespass of 1932. We'll be reporting back later and, if you scroll down, there's a fair bit about the event in past OM articles, but just for a minute, pause and think just how different walking reality was back then.
These days we get a little put out by overgrown stiles or gates that are locked, but back then the moors were privately owned and patrolled by predatory game-keepers. Getting caught out on Kinder could mean a beating or worse. A different world.
It's thanks to the bravery of the brave men and women who walked up onto Kinder Scout 80 years ago and those who followed that we now enjoy unprecedented access to the hills in England and Wales. So wherever you and whatever you're doing this morning, how about raising a mug of tea and remembering the Trespassers and what they stand for?
Back later!
