Dear All, thinking of getting a sleeping bag liner. Reasons are primarily to add warmth to my bag.

1) Is it worth getting one for warmth reasons + how much warmth does it add?

2) If so is silk worth the premium over non-silk?

3) Does anyone have one they want to sell?

Cheers, Si

The reasons for using a liner are usually-

a) Hygiene - it keeps your sleeping bag clean and laundering sleeping bags frequently isn't good for the bag and expensive (down and synthetic).

b) Comfort - Silk or cotton is nicer against the skin than the nylon/manmade fabrics that most bags are made of.

A liner can increase the warmth but only by a very small amount. Weight for weight you'd be better investing the weight of a liner in extra down inside the bag to boost it's warmth.

Silk liners are lighter in weight and usually pack smaller than cotton.

Try - www.terrevistatrails.com - who make some fun liners at respectable prices.

A down vest adds a lot more warmth than a liner and needn't weigh much at all. But I still use a liner quite often for the reasons cathy mentions.

Having had my silk one washed recently by someone else with no conditioner - they can be uncomfortable.

I expect to be shot down in flames but, you get what you pay for. I reckon it adds a couple of degrees,

If you are buying a decent quality bag, it is a must

The alternative is to use sleepwear which will be warmer and more versatile. I use a patra silk top and leggings.

you can get silk bag liners from ebay pretty cheap they are about 200g if i recall correctly, they seem quite nice, i used it once then decided its just not worth it for me. i Honestly dont think they add much warmth at all, for me its easier to just sleep in my base layer or if feeling the cold more microfleece/primaloft jacket, cant see the warmth of a liner beating any of those options.

As for the keeping the bag clean thing, for me at least unless you are doing hikes lasting longer than a week without washing i dont see it being to much of an issue in the long run.
