Hi, looking for general starting kit for my girlfriend as she wants to come on a few hikes with me, just though people might have the odd piece of gear they soon upgraded after getting bitten by the hiking bug.

Cheaper the better really as shes still at uni and doesnt have much money (translation im going to end up paying for it all).

After:

sleeping mat summer use mainly
sleeping bag again summer use but not to fussed
backpack less than 45 litre ideally

anything else really she has nothing at the min and none of my old starter kit fits her given she is minute compared to me lol.

What size is she?

I have a Haglofs synthetic insulated jacket to sell.

But also some base layers that are in a pile to go to the charity shop as I no longer wear them (good condition). These would go to a good home in return for a small donation to my MR team.

hi that sounds great she is really small usually a size 6 -8 and 5foot 1inch, how much would you want for the jacket ?

I'm afraid I'm a 12, Paul

Base layers wouldn't be any good either as they'll be too loose on her. You may need to take her on a spree! TKMaxx is a great place for bargain finding.

Paul, do remember when buying her the sleeping bag women tend to "sleep colder" than us blokes, so i'd be inclined to go for a 3 season bag, she can always vent it if too hot, but if she ends up cold it could spoil a lifetime of romantic nights under canvas*.

*More likely silnylon but how unromantic does that sound.

If she is that small have a look at kids' gear - often cheaper than adults'.  Size 11/12 or 13/14 is similar to 6.

And a lot of stuff from 'cheaper' brands is very acceptable to get started with- Trespass and Campri for example. Check out the Field and Trek website where they have a more or less permanent sale.
