I just bought a pair of Raichle (izzat how you spell that?) Axis XCR's for doing the West Highland Way in September. Done it last year and only had boots with me, the change of lighter footwear would have been a godsend

The Terrocs - if they fit your feet - are just superb. I really don't want to go back to boots again!

These mythical Terrocs are hard to find but I did track down a pair in Easy Runner, Bristol only this afternoon. They felt pretty good and comfy, perhaps a bit lighter than I'd expected.

I'm sure they would do the business but I decided not to make a purchase, even though it would have been nice to own a pair of British trail runners, just for novelty value. What put me off? Earlier in the afternoon I had bought a pair of Montrail Leona Divides from Northern Runner in Newcastle (online). They are £25 off in the sale. These are a slightly heavier duty shoe, perhaps the last port of call between trail runner and approach Shoe territory. They are very popular on the long US trails and a good alternative for those who think the Terrocs a bit flimsy. Get 'em while they're hot

Hope the Montrails are good. THe Terrocs, though, are certainly not flimsy!

Ive owned 3 models from Montrail, including Leona Divides,Java GTX and recently Hardrocks.Their quality stuff for running,in the hills etc etc..its great when you can find a footwear brand that are sized consistently so I can mail order with confidence.

My thoughts exactly Proudwelsh.

I hiked the AT in 2 pairs of Montrail Javas and was traumatised when they stopped making them. I remembered that I always used a US size 12, so I had the bloke at Northern Runner disappearing out the back to make absolutely sure this equated to a UK 11, as some companies call it a 11.5.

It has to be said that Montrails are more commonly found than Innov 8, but you still don't exactly find them on the shelf next to the Merrells. I should really get in to the Hard Rocks as I have a feeling the Leona Divide will be joining the Javas in trail shoe heaven fairly soon too.

As I said, they do a good range of chunky trail shoe, some like the Mountain Mist, in Gore Tex for those people who have qualms about jumping in to really light unlined shoes straight away after being boot boys (and girls.)

www.northernrunner.com will get you the £40 Leonas.
