Hi! I am going on a 5 days trip and need to get some form of hydration system into my backpack as well. I have been looking at all these discussion about platys & camels but I am not quite sure, what to use best, if it needs to be squeezed in with my other luggage or to be attached to the outside (on 65l rucksack). Thought of a 2 litre version Any suggestions?

Much of a muchness really. If I were you, I'd hot-foot it down to Aldis and pick up a rucksack with bladder for £9.99. You can use the bladder in any rucksack.

 But how about getting squashed???
|
 |
?? It'll be full of water!!
In a rucksack with a bladder compartment, it's still compressed by the contents of the main sack - usually between those contents and your back.

 |
argh... I seem to miss something important - Ok - just to recap - you suggest that I buy a hydration rucksack with a bladder inside and then squeeze the whole small rucksack into the big rucksack? Please correct me if I got that wrong!!!
|
 |
 Oops!
The bladder will come out and can be tucked inside your normal rucksack.
For contingency (and I do this anyway) use a rucksack liner and make sure the bladder is outide it.

The Aldi bladder, and I have two that I have had for over two years and they are still going great is cheaper than buying one elsewhere even with the small rucksack it comes with.
The rucksac is just a bonus freebee cos most bladders cost about £15 anyway.
If you do want to spend more on a branded bladder then I would recomend one with an antibacterial coating.

call me blind or impatient but could this be that ALDI doesn't have any hydration systems on offer at the moment...? If correct, are there any other options???

The may have meant the Lidl Hydration sackA current special, which started yesterday. Get down and have a look. £10. If there aren't any left, try your local Tesco Extra, who I believe are also selling cheap hydration packs. If not, look at any of the regulars, Camelback, Platypus, Ortlieb, MSR. I think they're all much of a muchness. Or just carry some PET bottles. They come with free water or fizzy pop in them ;-)

 Oops! Should have been Lidl

a lot of rucksacks now are bladder compatable which means thereis a pocket at the back of the rucksack to fit the bladderin and a small hole for the tube to poke through i was in lidl today and they had quite a few left you will probably see the same ones on ebay

 nice one simonx
I've just got one of the lidl packs; looks to be spot on.
If you can't get hold of one, I've heard good things about the Decathlon bladders. they're generally cheaper than Platypus/Camelbak

Yup get down to Lidl before theyre all gone.

Hi everybody! Thanks for the Lidl tip. I put it on my list to watch out for as they were all sold out... And thanks for the alternative, Simonx - but apologies I might decline - slightly mmmh unpractical...

Just go out and buy a Source bladder, the one with the braided hose cover or a Platypus Big Zip. And buy a 3 litre one, you don't have to fill it, but if you've got a long hot day a head and no refill point you can only get 2 litres of water in a 2 litre bladder. I don't mention Camelbak because I think the taste of plastic. The Source one has a partial cover on it and will be better protected in your sack, it's also got a hanging loop attached. Th Platy is good too, but has to go in a sleeve, you can't hang the new ones.

I second the vote for the Source. I have a 3 litre one and it is excellent. Mine folds over and seals with a plastic thing that slides on. Very tidy. No taste of plastic either, unlike my camelbak.

Fantastic! I have seen them before and liked them quite a lot... and the price is more or less the same to other brands. Hence, my plan - I get that one and should Lidl have some on offer @ some point - there is my ersatz bag. Oh great - thanks so much!

Camelbak here. Never had any problems with taste or leaking bladders. Tried Platypus and found that the fold points can weaken and also in colder weather it can go brittle.
