 Hi,
I need a new small rucksack, mainly for cycle commuting so want one with good night time visibility.
I have seen those Hi Viz rucksack covers - but fail to see why I should pay £16 for one for those as well as buying a rucksack!
Doesn't have to be as high-vis as those by the way.
Any suggestions?
Thanks ......... Simon.

The £16 for the cover does not sound too bad if you already have a rucksack you could use and to be extra safe?
Would also attach a red running / cycling light or two onto the rucksack.

i have a lowe alpine mountaine contour thats a nice grimy yellowy-green colour, but the colouring dousn't really do the bisiness at night. just get some Hi-Viz self adhesive SOLAS tape from fleabay.
SOLAS is the designation for the 'reflectivity' required by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency for items like lifejackets on offshore vessels.
it would be effective at 150m or so with dipped headlights - more than does the trick.
my kit is covered in it - you can also get it in 'sew on' form.

Hang a peacock out the back of it.

I wish those hi visibility rucksack covers had been available when I used to commute to work. I would have willingly paid £16 if it helped save my life.

My god Lorraine,
are you dead.
Strange place to haunt but someone's got to do it I guess :o)
|
 |
Hi Lorraine - I agree, but since I need a new rucksack then why have the hassle of a cover (and loss of sixteen quid) when I could justr a get a high visibility rucksack in the first place!
|

No, I'm not dead. But it's a miracle that I'm not.
I spent 6 years cycling to and from work when I lived in Reading and that was enough to frighten anyone to death.
Even though I wore a reflective vest, a reflective band around my helmet, had lights on the front and rear of my bike, drivers somehow still managed to "not see me"!!!

I've been after a high visibility rucksack myself but can't find one anywhere.
If you find one, then let me know.
Perhaps someone on BikeMagic.com knows where to buy one.

I should imagine that living in Reading is enough to frighten anyone to death!

Have a look at a cycle specific rucksack as most have reflective piping, a bit for a LED light and occasionally a high vis cover. Edinburgh Bicycle Co-op sells some good ones.

Simonx - it was, and that's why I now live in Cockermouth.

I went to Reading recently for the festival.
Very nice, but can't remember much.

Iain - I'm not surprised that you can't remember. As for me, well I've tried to erase all memories of Reading from my brain.

I went to the Reading festival in the eighties when metal was to the fore, very good. There was a guy on ebay selling karrimor Hydro rucksacks, (not me, I'm calvinbmarshall on there), I use them for cycling. There so reflective it causes aopproaching cars to swerve.

I put some reflec tape onto my pack, as I realised I wasn't that visible when treking at night. It also helped mark out some of the straps on the Zpack.
Someone suggested using the red light on the new Petzl e+lite as a tail-light.

It's what you might call reflect heaven..scroll down there's a category for clothing but i'm partial to railroad car conspicuity tape!

a coverwill help keep stuff dry...and would certainly keep the mud & rubbish out of zips etc etc . if its one of the elasticated ones, they're handy for carrying helmets & waterproofs when you get off. Buy a cheap fluoro jacket or scrounge a knackered one off a road worker etc & make yer own!

Stewart just touched on what I do! I dont have lots of money for my cycling and try not to cycle in bad light but I always carry a builder's style hi-viz vest (somehow taken from a building site- though available cheaply anyway) and I wrap it round my bag.
