I have a pair of all leather gore-tex free Meindls which -obviously- need to be waxed regularly. But what's regular? After two days I allready get the impression they need another rub, but my girlfriend gets a bit scared by my fanaticism. So hence this question, how often do you wax?

whenever mine get wet wet and the leather starts to soak, then its time for a wax,my Gfriend also wonders about my fanatcism lol

This thread was started in the wrong place and has been moved to the fetish room.

I use Aqueous Wax after each trip on my Meindl's.
Ooh, I do love a good wax though. Seriously, it's very therapeutic I always think. I like the feel of rubbing it in and the way it makes my hands all soft, and.. (disappears for cold shower)
you dont want to overdo it as some waxes can soffen the leather if overapplied. i usally apply every 3-4 outings maby more often if wet weather is likely.

About twice a year (and I am out most weeks). I think I waxed my last pair of boots 5 or 6 times in their 10 year life.....
Perhaps I should get my cleaner to do it ;-) ?
depends on the wax. what i call proper wax i do once a year. nikwax aqeous gets done when it's needed.
my boots are always washed after an outing and if any wet bits haven't dried within 20 mins they get nikwaxed.
Oh! Twice a year? I'm always afraid i'll damage the leather if I don't wax them at least after every three walks. But of course there's also the sheer pleasure of rubbing the leather, of being committed to your gear and stuff...
Whilst I might embrace the idea of deriving pleasure from rubbing the leather...I have yet to form a bond of commitment to my gear....
using proper wax on them too much will soften the leather excessively. you can kill your boots by lavishing too much care and attention on them.
i clean andcondition my boots after every trip.apart from deep cuts from scrambling and discolouratin on toe box(walking through wet grass)the leather is perfect.only problem is the sole is pretty worn after 2 years of use.
After the boots get washed they get a wax from me.
Just look and feel your boots after they have had a chance to dry after a walk. If they look and feel dry in places then they probably could do with some wax.
Also cow/sheep poo and peat can damage your boots so you should ideally clean your boots at the earliest opportunity after they have been in contact with these substances.

Speak to Meindl and use what they suggest. I've mentioned on another thread the problem I had with them becasue I used Nikwax.
I am afraid i cant find that particular thread but il will speak to bill gates and a get some suggestions on how to work a computer.

Mine get done pretty much after each trip. They always look as if they need it to me when I get back home and they havent fallen to bits yet. Parky, when you say.... "depends on the wax. what i call proper wax i do once a year. nikwax aqeous gets done when it's needed." What is the "proper" wax you do once a year? I only have Nikwax aqueous stuff. Oh yeah my boots are gore tex lined dunno if that makes a difference.

Meindl recommend... Meindl 'sportswax'. I haven't seen it on sale in the UK - not that I've been looking too keenly - but I got some when I bought my latest boots at the Meindl factory (Bavaria) last year. I'd be interested to know what the actual difference is between these 'wax' products. When I was a kid I used to use loads of Nikwax from the tub, and, as Parky reminds us, I did kill them with kindness. After that I used to use aqueous Nikwax as you can apply it with the boots still wet. In general I have tended to ensure the boots are cleaned after every outing (or at least say that I try to do it) and then make a note when the wax is wearing off (the leather seems to absorb water) and only wax again then. I hope it doesn't make a difference whether the boots are goretex lined or not - I'd've thought the leather still needs treatment all the same.
