Well, G-jects is lighter than everyone elses by a clear country mile. But then he has accidentally removed half of it!!

Oh and TDS - yes mine is lighter - I cant objectively prove it. I just think it therefore it is

Akto seems over hyped.......

Well, to the Akto owners out there: here are a few considerations on the dilemma facing us in our never ending quest to shed kit weight...

I weighed my Akto (2004 model) on my (low tech) kitchen scales. Here's what I got:

Akto plus sac = 1.2Kg
pole + sac = 190g
footprint (original) + sac = 290g

Total: 1.68kg

[I have excluded pegs from the calculations because folks tend to use different pegs. e.g. I replaced the original ones with Titanium ones etc.)

Now, there are some mods one can resort to to pare down weight:

http://www.fibraplex.com/tentpoles2b.asp

1) remove corner struts:

[I haven't checked this myself, but Fibraplex claims the 4 struts weigh 54g)

replace them with carbon fibre struts from Fibraplex:

struts = 18g

new Akto weight = 1.146Kg

2) replace pole

Fibraplex pole = 85g

Cost of the mod = £56 (give or take a dollar or two)

3) replace footprint (if you use one):

http://www.teamio.co.uk/shop/category_9/Groundsheets-_-footprints.html?shop_param=cid%3D9%26

spinnaker footprint = 150g

Cost of the mod = £35

Total new weight: 1.399Kg

So, for the princely sum of £91 one has obtained a net gain of 281g (while undoubtedly weakening the structural capabilities of the Akto: carbon fibres poles can and do snap...).

Further gains can be had by changing guy lines etc.

Not sure where this leaves the poor Akto owner in his quest for a lighter tent though...

Fork out an extra £100 and go for the LC instead? Or go the extra mile for the Photon (which gives you a full kilo of shaved off weight?)

Rounding things up you get something like this:

Original Akto: 1.7 (with footprint)

Mod Akto: 1.4

LC: 940g (without footprint); 1090g (with spinnaker footprint); 1175g (with TN footprint)

[these weights include the peg weight for the TN new 2g each pegs...)

Photon: 790g (without footprint); 940g (with spinnaker footprint); 1025g (with TN footprint)

If you think a footprint is a good idea to keep warm/reduce condensation/increase tent life, the rounded up figures in a nutshell are as follows:

Akto: 1.7
Mod Akto: 1.4
LC: 1.2
Photon: 1.

And that's that...

Food for thought of what?

Ah, decision, decisions...

150g for a LC spinnaker footprint? Mine weighs 75g

It is Chris Townsend's scales you want, for he says in this months TGO:

"The amazingly low weight of the Laser Competition - less than half that of the similar sized Akto - makes this a very attractive choice ..."

Shurely some mistake!

Well, I suppose if you count the Hilleberg footprint and pegs, you do get to something like 1.8Kg for the Akto and if you assume the official weight for the LC you get something like 940g (w/o footprint)...

Or perhaps CT is rounding up Hilleberg's official packed weight (w/o footprint) of 1.5Kg and is comparing it to the LC 'minimum weight' (which I think exclude the pole cover) of 860g.

Btw, I'm afraid in my final comparison I mixed 'n matched footprints (by mishtake!), so if they all go for Matt's spinnaker's footprint the weight comparison would be something like:

Akto 1.465Kg
Akto mod 1.324Kg
LC 1.015Kg
Photon 865
