hello i'm after some advice about GPS not had one before and i'm just after a basic model so I can get a grid ref if I need one on the hill can anyone help I know nowt about them !!
I bought a cheap Garmin 12XL on Ebay - it's heavier that some of the newer models but rugged and accurate.
Personally i would go for the most basic of models if thats all you need it for ,like a Garmin Etrex(cheap on ebay) or Lowrance Ifinder,or garmin geko 101 if thats all you will need it for,
there are a few drawbacks to these models
geko 101=not usable with a PC if you ever decide to get mapping software.go for the 201 if you think you might then try at a later date.
Etrex great(use one myself) basic piece of kit but no cable if again you decide to go for mapping software at a later date(ebay again around a tenner)
when you get one use it locally first to familiarise yourself with it rather than on the hills.. hope this has helped.

It depends on your budget but id suggest the Garmin GPS 60 from amazon or it can maybe found cheaper else where
it comes with all the cables you need to hook it up to your computer, it has great battery life and is very easy to use.
The most popular model you will see everywhere is the Garmin eTrex:
-Easy to use -Everyone knows how to use it - not an obscure model -Connects to your PC so you can plan routes -Great battery life -Great performance -Cheap (widely discounted, pay around £80-£90, for instance of amazon.co.uk
This should tell you something. The majority of people trust it to work.
Or, if weight is an issue, then the most popular option is the Garmin Geko 201. Similar performance for half the weight, shorter battery life, more expensive.

thanks again would i be able to use the etrex with memory map
Yes the etrex does work with memory map as i have one and use it myself..
only for waypoints etc. you can't use the mapping.
The Etrex Venture will work with Memory map and import routes, waypoints and tracks, export tracks, waypoints.
If you just need a basic model and want to use it to confirm grid refs then save yourself a bundle and buy a Geko 201.
You can still upload routes and waypoints to it if you want to.
having seen the price differential between models, i would also go with the geko 201 recommendation. nice little unit.
I just got a Etrex Vista CX from Jessops.com 247.82 with free delivery and then I used a 10% off voucher code "FREEINDEX".
Which meant the final price was 223.03
Not bad for a UK model and free delivery. It said it was a special order but it came in 3 days.
Try gpsforless.com. Got my geko 301 from there last year. Excellent advice when I spoke to them
I have got a Geko 201. Simple and easy to use.
The 301 is a nice unit too - it has in addition to the 201 a barometer and electronic compass (and apparently a different processor giving 40% better battery life).
