So, are Weird Darren and Oot the only people on this site who don't actually like or (grudgingly) use a buff?

After much resistance I did finally get a buff and have to say I love it - especially for stopping sweat running into your eyes and protecting bald patches from the sun ;-)
As for oot's no, no, no, no, no, no.... Buffs are just wrong!!!!! comment can I just remind everyone that this is the chap who walked off the Aonach Eagach in a nun's outfit! ;-)

Oh I think the whimple might have looked quite fetching on him!!
;)))
|
 |

And it gives more protection from the sun than a Buff !!
;)))

If you watch the Buff video on their site, they cover the buff-with-havelock option, Tony.

But it's not as lightweight

I'm sure you can get light-weight wicking whimples for nuns in hot climates.

Wimples are also ladies-only, IIRC. But there was a medieval 'snood' that could be worn as a hat or around the neck. I can't recall its name though.
|
 |
good as a neck gaiter. also good for cleaning glasses, handling hot pans, cleaning windows, winscreens etc, wiping down anything that's wet including brow.
hang on, sorry, got confused there, i'm talking about a scarf.
back to a buff - useless at keeping your head cool, even when wet. zero uv protection when wet. you can only wear it in wide open spaces. and people have the nerve to mock a tiley hat.
|
 |
Fantastic at keeping you cool when wet: 1. because it looks 'cool' ;o) 2. I dip it in a beck and slap it on as a head-band. Gravity sends much of the water downwards so you can enjoy the gentle coolness on the back of your neck then turn it round to re-cool your forehead.
I bought one then didn't use it for a year but once I'd tried it as a neck-gaiter, hair band, ear warmer-without keeping top of head too-warm etc etc now I wouldn't travel without one.

Interesting to see our different viewpoints on something as small as a buff.
Personally I've always hated scarves - too long, too warm, too bulky, too much trouble
I run warm & that thin piece of cloth is just enough for me when walking or skiing into a blizzard, riding a chairlift in the cold-sink of a forest ride or to keep my napper warm enough ether as a hat or headband, wipe up the odd spill in the tent.
Now if you want to talk about pointless bits of cloth - how about handkerchiefs?
