I was all set to buy the comp, but then I saw the photon advertised and I am now tempted by this.  I appreciate the draw backs you've mentioned, but I do intend to use it for short trips of 1-3 nights and mountain marathons. 

I'll ponder it some more.

Call me cyncial, but I thought the tight control of the release of the Photon (only 2 retail chains??) would be to keep the price high?

I think there may actually be just the one retailer offering it at the moment, in the run up to the OMM. What we are a little afraid of is a discounting frenzy that leads to lots of people buying on price rather than their particular requirements. We want retailers to offer the Photon alongside the Comp so that people can get an idea of what the difference is.

I personally wouldn't like to see the Photon discounted everywhere as I know how much work has gone in to it!
