A short local walk

I was unable to go far yesterday as Edith had to accompany our daughter on a well overdue visit to the Dentist for a 2 hour appointment under sedation and I was getting a twinge of arthritic pain in my left hip (it's soooo much fun getting older). Anyway I had to settle for a short stroll/hobble along the beach at Hest Bank. There are some pictures in the "Local Pictures" section.

Yesterdays walk was along the banks of the Lancaster Canal near Galgate. I wanted to stay on the flat because the left hip is still "playing up". For those, like me, who like bridges and reflections in the water this should please. Pictures are now on the website.

South Lakes -- Gummers How

We were only meant to be having a drive out yesterday but as we approached Newby Bridge we had to put the foglights on because the mist was so thick. THinking that there may be a cloud inversion about I turned right and we were soon parked up in the Gummers How car park. There was indeed an inversion but it was dissipating fast as we headed to the summit. We were soon on the summit and left only with very, very hazy views. On descending we stopped off at Fell Foot Park owned by the National Trust to get a few reflections on a glass-like Windermere. Pictures are now available.

South Lakes:   Summer House Knott and Finsthwaite Heights.

I left the car near Newby Bridge and first went up Summer House Knott which figured in the cloud inversion on our previous walk. After descending to the hamlet of Finsthwaite I took the track up to Finsthwaite Heights, one of Wainwrights Outlying Fells with the delightfull High Dam at the top. May people consider High Dam to be a far better spot than the far busier Tarn Hows to the north and I would agree with them. After descendind back to Finsthwaite I returned to Newby Bridge via Great Knott wood and Lakeside. Pictures are now available.

Ambleside.

Not a walk in the true sense of the word but as we had to go to Ambleside for some new boots I decided to take the camera and walk it into town from Waterhead. We then walked up to Stockghyll Force before going to the shops. There are some pictures on the website in the new section "Visions of Cumbria" for those interested.

Latterbarrow.

Just a short walk from Colthouse near Hawkshead to the top of Latterbarrow which overlooks Windermere. This is another of Wainwrights Outlying Fells and instantly recognisable by the fine obelisk on its summit. Pictures are now on the website.

Cunswick Fell and Scout Scar

A walk along this lovely scar edge which is just to the east of Kendal in the South Lakes. Not the best of days for the views it as to offer but we did manage to get a few. Pictures are now available on the website.

Arnside & Silverdale AONB:-      Warton Crag

A walk up to the top of Warton Crag from Crag Foot this morning on a very windy day. Not a lot in the way of views with quite a bit of cloud about but once again one or two were ok. Pictures are now available on the website.

Central Lakes

No tops today but an absolutely fantastic walk from Pelter Bridge near Rydal. The route was a circuit of Rydal Water and Grasmere using Loughrigg Terrace and the shoreside path out and returning along the old "Coffin Route". A fantastic day and great views. My hip is complaining today but it was worth it. Pictures are now available on the website.

Local Walk.

I had bought a new camera (Fuji Finepix S8000fd) the previous day and was itching to try it out so despite it being a very dull day with intermittent drizzle we had a short walk along the Lancaster Canal near Garstang before going to Glasson Dock. Hopefully the pictures will improve with both the weather and the user. For those interested they are now on the website.

Yorkshire Dales National Park

A walk in the area of the famous Ribblehead viaduct which carries the Settle - Carlisle railway. A cloudy day with some sun made this an enjoyable little walk. Pictures are now available on the website.

Local

Just a short local walk today along the coastline around high water. I was interested to see how the new coastal defences performed under stormy conditions. Difficult to stand in places and a bit of wave dodging involved but the defences seemed ok. Pictures now available.

Central Lakes:     Loughrigg Fell from Elterwater

After getting caught up in a 2 mile tailback of traffic up to Troutbeck Bridge on the A591 we finally made it to Elterwater where we walked up over Walthwaite Bottom towards Huntingstile Crag. From there we took a path to Red Bank and then went up Loughrigg. From the summit we took the path south towards Ivy Crag and then down to Loughrigg Tarn. From the tarn we went over Neaum Crag and down to Skelwith Bridge from where we returned to Elterwater along the Cumbria Way. Pictures for the walk are now available on the website.

Lake District:  Far Eastern Fells --- Wansfell

Edith was back with me today and a quick run up the M6/A591 soon had us parked up at Church Bridge Troutbeck. Our route took us through Troutbeck and up Nanny Lane to the summit of Wansfell itself. We then followed the ridge S'wrds to the more popular Wansfell Pike overlooking Ambleside. Our descent took us S'wards to meet up with the Troutbeck - Ambleside bridleway and a return to Troutbeck. The pictures from this walk are now available on the website.

South Lakes  ---- The Kendal Scars

One of my favourites of the Outlying Fells and on a day like today the views from here are fantastic. This is a walk that everyone with a love of the Lake District should do at least the once.

Walking in the Forest of Bowland

A walk yesterday in an area we haven't visited for about 15 years. We left the car at Scorton (near Forton Servives M6) and walked up Nicky Nook which is the most western vantage point in the F of B. our route then took us to Fell End farm and Grizedale Bridge before walking back down past Grizedale Lea and Barnacre reservoirs. Pictures for this walk are now available on the website , just click on the "Last Walk" button.

The Forest of Bowland -- Littledale

A short car trip from home had us parked up near Little Crag on the Brookhouse to Quernmore road by 9:30am.  Our route first took us down into the delightful Littledale valley which we followed upwards passing a couple of "interesting" old churchs along the way. We then made our way upwards onto open moor on the northern flanks of Clougha Pike before making a return to the car. Pictures are now on site, just click on the "Last Walk" button.
