I did the 3 peaks last week, and coming down from Ingleborough in the dark and rain and a bit of mist, it was obvious that my eLite and my mates Tikka+ weren`t really up to the job, not so bad as to be scared, just annoying.

I`ve decided to get a better headtorch, and have been looking at the Tikka XP and Myo XP. Has anyone tried the two side by side in comparison? Is there a huge amount of difference in the beams especially the normal main beam, not so much the boosted beam? Is the Myo as bulky as it looks? Is the Myo worth the extra money?

 Cheers!

I looked at them both a while back, then was forced in to buying a Tikka XP,it was so good when we got back i bought another one.Why...well it is amazingly powerful for its size....the diffuser works really well...the spot even better...its comfortable on the head...batteries easily obtainable and changeable even in the dark[need to read the knack tho]....have used it mountain biking, gives a good view compared to other previous Petzls and Black Diamonds[which it replaces]...friend has a MYO and he was very impressed with the XP..

I would recommend it unreservedly and i would not say the same about all of the other Petzls i have used and owned over the last years.I always have a niggling doubt about the battery connectors on Petzls, lets hope they dont start to niggle on the XP.

Always found big caving lamps the best thing to get off Ingleborough in the dark though,so glad you got off ok....chris

Can't comment on the Myo but I'm 100% happy with the Tikka XP.Very light and comfortable and the beam is very good (even better on boost). I got it because it was cheaper than the myo but also because it didn't have the separate battery compartment, used less batteries and was lighter. I've used it on the Lakes 3000s twice, once in April when we had darkness all the way up Skiddaw and down and all the way to Stockley bridge.

Myo Xp works well.

I'm all for the Tikka XP.  After descending that western spur of Aonach Mor last winter in darkness with it I decided (after my disco leg had abated) that it was the torch for me.

Or that Black Diamond one.

I've used both - tried a tikka XP and bought a Myo XP. The Myo is significantly brighter, and much more balanced since the batteries are at the back. This means that a) you can run with it more easily, and b) the beam doesn't bounce around so much.  I found the tikka wasn't quite bright enough for nighttime trail running tho' was great for hiking. The Myo is noticeably heavier, but then if weight matters, the black diamond ion wins by a country mile!

myo xp will provide ample light for night nav, good battery life. if i was to buy again id take a good look at black diamonds offerings. my myo purchase was an quick buy when i realised id gone away without any lighting!

but i do like the myo, would be better if it had a flip down red lense.

I once decended Ben More on Mull in complete darkness with a Tikka XP and it was fantastic!

Thanks everyone. I think by the sounds of it the Tikka XP will do what I need, though I think my mate might go for the Myo as it takes the same batteries as all his other stuff. I`ll keep the e-lite for low level,  clear weather stuff, which it is great for, and also for camping.

When getting the Myo make sure you get the 2008 edition as it is 200% brighter.  You can tell which is which because the new edition is grey.

I walk a lot at night.  I have the Tikka XP, my son the Myo XP.  Have compared both, side by side.  The Myo is not that much brighter, considering it's meant  to be 3w against the Tikka's 1w.  But the batteries will last much longer on the Myo, but then one set of spare AAAs is not a lot.  I usually reckon to have two torches with me which will get me off the hill, so I use an old PT which takes 3x AAA and use that for almost everything, then when its batteries are low, give it those out of the Tikka and put new in that.  That way, I have two torches, the better of which has the best batteries and the whole combination weighs about 160 gms.  Add a spare set of batteries (if out for several nights) and it's still minimal.

I am in a rescue team.  My search torch failed on a recent exercise and I did not have time to change the bulb so carried on with the Tikka, using its boost button to search, then move on and search again.  I was amazed at how effective it was.  Petzls (Myo XP and Tikka XP) are, I think, the only ones to have this boost button which over-rides the main setting, so you can follow a path with it in your hand, at the lowest possible setting and hit boost as and when needed.  Other makes require you to go through the switch cycle to get the setting you require.

The Tikka is so small that I was looking for it one day and realised it had been in my fleece pocket all day without my being aware of it.  A great torch.

What abut the Silva L1.  Takes AAs and an even number too - so ideal for rechargeable types like me...  Any thoughts/reviews?

I bought the Silva L1 to try out, with a view to using it for mountain biking. It's certainly very bright, easily outpowering a Tikka xp. It's got heat fins on the lamp housing meaning it can run at full power all the time, unlike the Myo xp which can only run on full power (boost) for 20 seconds. However, I thought it was a big heavy lump of a headtorch, too heavy for a bike helmet and quite bulky as well. Also, moving the battery boxes around the headstrap resulted in some of the grippy rubber getting torn off. It was hastily returned to Wiggle.

For night time walking I just use a Tikka xp with a bright hand held torch. I personally prefer the beam from a hand held torch, it's at a better angle for seeing while walking and doesn't dazzle me like a headtorch, particularly if it's misty or raining, so the Tikka is just for when I need both hands free. BTW the Fenix led torches seem to get raved about.

I have the XP, used it tonight round the streets and saved me from stepping in some dog doo a couple of times, very comfortable and the difference between the diffused and direct beam are very noticeable.

Cannot comment on the Tikka as I haven't tried it.

I have the Tikka XP and every time i have used it people have commented how good it is.

Thanks agiain everyone, I`ve ordered a Tikka XP (well a TakTikka XP actually) from a place on eBay.com  (US)   e.g. item no 290199606937 . The Tikka works out at about £30 inc delivery, TakTikka is about £33.

I  have both and have used both in some very nasty conditions  And been very happy with preformance I had and worn 2 zooms in the passed I thought that they were good

at the time.

I'd recommend the Myo over the Tikka Xp any day.  I do a lot of trail running at night  with my MYO XP and even on very dark nights it more than adequate.  The Tikka XP while being a bit lighter, isn't as powerful and certainly not bright enough to run at any speed with.

Apparently, the new Myo XP is available now which is 'reputedley' 200% brighter with a longer battery life.

There's now a much bigger difference between the Myo and Tikka XPs. The old Myo XP was 45m reach on maximum versus 35m on the Tikka XP. The new one now has a figure of 72m. but what seals it for me is that you can run the the new Myo XP for 10 hours on maximum and it'll still be brighter than a Tikka XP on brand new batteries (39m against 35m).

Just upgraded from a petzl zoom and micro (summer/winter combo) to a myobelt xp (2008 version) £56.99 from Likeys.com here:  petzl myobelt xp

Been after a belt version as I'm tired of getting headaches from the battery pack as it chills down....

I think I'm allowed an upgrade after 17 years....
