This ignore member business is a chat room thing and will encourage all sorts of pettiness. Did anyone actually ask for it?

It's a function that will probably be more useful on some Magicalia sites than on others, Dynddinas. If it proves to be actively damaging to a forum, then it could be made switch-offable from site to site, but for now we imagine that it will be a function that people will use if they want to, and not use if they don't.

As Matt C suggested, you've probably got to really  find someone objectionable before you'd bother to use it, because for a start it makes threads read strangely sometimes

Weird. I had an email notification regarding this thread, even though I don't have notifications on.

Also, there is no longer a 'NEW' flash beside Bennachie if someone has posted on it since I last looked. Which I think is important!

Just to answer a few of your questions about today's forum changes in one block - thanks for all your comments so far

I can't see some of the bits that have been updated

If you can't see the 'insert quote' button, or icons or colours seem to be missing, please empty your browser's cache, or hard-refresh the page you are looking at (ctrl-F5 on IE) - your browser may be storing old elements of the page.

Where's private messaging?

Ahem... it'll be uploaded separately tomorrow. We didn't realise that that would be the case. That's why the 'new' system looks strangely familiar...
When it appears, you'll have a 'My Inbox' link in your member pod, and when you click 'message member', you'll be taken to a page that contains something very much like the forum message form. You can read more about private messaging here

Why doesn't quoting work
There are no known bugs as we speak*, so please could you check the guide to quoting, in the next post. If you still have problems with it, please could you contact me using the 'message member' link under this post, explaining what happens (or doesn't), and which browser you use.
*On a previous version of the quoting system, clearing your browser's cookies made a difference, but that should no longer be an issue.. (I hope those aren't famous last words)

My email notifications have stopped
Only two things about  notifications should have changed:
1. The manner of notifications - they now send one email per thread, then wait til you've visited before sending any more
2. They are now sent from notifications@outdoorsmagic.com, not forum@ - please check your spam filters and  add notifications@ to your trusted-email list if you need to. (Notifications@ will also be used to send you notifications of private messages, if you choose to receive them)

The threads you were signed up to, and your default setting for new threads, should be exactly as they were. We have taken a database snapshot of your old settings; please message me if yours don't seem right.

I use Safari...
Sorry, Safari still does some things differently from other browsers, and only works with the basic version of our forum editor. As soon as they become compatible, we'll make the upgrade, but for now, Firefox is the best bet for Mac users.

also

Is there a limit on the number of members I can ignore?
Yes, 20, at the moment...

Can I unignore someone?
Yes, from your list of ignored members on your My Forum page (More about the Ignore function here)

There's more about all of the forum functions in this help guide, and there will shortly be a permanent link to it at the top of the main forum page

Phew - hope some of that helps a bit

How to quote other people's messages
  • Click the quote button under a post you want to quote
  • A popup explains that to paste the quote into your message, you need to press the quote button on the message form. This popup has a 'don't show me this again' tickbox.
  • You can select multiple posts to quote before pasting them together. The quote button turns red under messages that have been selected for quoting, and you can deselect a message by pressing its quote button (now 'unquote') again.

  • Quotes from one thread can be pasted into another thread. A 'see' link by the quoted text takes readers back to the original post, whether it is in the same thread or not.
  • Your unpasted quotes remain available until they are pasted or until the end of your session, whichever is sooner
  • You can manually edit the quoted post once it's in your message form, eg if you don't want to quote the whole message
  • As mentioned above, it doesn't work with Safari (or Safari doesn't work with it) - sorry. All other current browsers should be fine, so if you have problems please report them)

Sean, Magicalia

Thanks for all your help, Sean, BUT I use safari on a Phone at times (like surfing in bed or on the train) and it won't allow me to download stuff like browsers. I will await your upgrade.

Safari still does some things differently from other browsers

Safari is international standards compliant, unlike IE. If the site won't work in Safari it is usually because the site isn't coded properly

There's no quote button on the edit toolbar when I use Firefox and the insert picture button requires a URL so how do we insert a picture from, say, paint?
Please could you hard-refresh your page (using the toolbar refresh arrow on Firefox) as it sounds as if your browser has cached the old versions
Ian Iles wrote (see)

It's the box with the tree in it, Ian

But that was there before. Not in Safari, but with Camino, Firefox, and IE (on work PC) was definitely there before

Ian, the new version of the image tool has two extra options in the popup: insert image from your OutdoorsMagic gallery; and Insert image from your computer [this inserts it into your gallery album and your forum post at the same time]
ie, you no longer need to load your image to an external site or to your OM gallery and then paste its url into the popup, if you don't want to.
Re Safari: how about 'other browsers still do things differently from Safari...' The foundations of the forum wysiwyg editor use a third-party component, which we're waiting to be upgraded to Safari compatibility. Either way, point taken

Anyway, end of this enormous monologue.... as you were

Glyn, try deleting your cookies. You'll then need to log back into OM. Worked for me. (XP SP2 + IE7)

Glyn, that suggests the quoting cookie is not being stored by your browser, usually either because

1. It's reached the limit on the number of OM cookies it will accept, in which case clearing them once will do the trick

or

2. Your browser security settings are set to restrict cookies from all sites, in which case, making OM a 'trusted site', if you have that function, is the safest solution.

Thanks for all those answers, Sean. I apologise if I seem a bit slow at the moment, I've had either some sort of stomach bug or food poisoning, which I'm still getting over. Nowt to do with the forum upgrades.

Fwiw, I fully appreciate the frustrations of using Safari because that's what I do use on my desktop, I use Firefox on a Macbook though and if you're a Mac user, it works very well. You can import all your Safari settings anyway, so any transition is pretty seamless.

To be honest, the 'ignore member' feature is, as Sean says,  more applicable to a few other Magicalia sites where there are small numbers of very vociferous posters who you may actually want to ignore. I like to think that that's not really the case with OM, mainly because the forum's always been very friendly and good natured.

Because the forum software is designed to work across a number of different sites, there are features that may seem irrelevant to OM, but obviously you don't have to use them if you don't want to.

I'll do my best, but I don't feel a general clamour for big red letters. Have you spoken to a professional about your yearnings

/members/images/16/Gallery/devilsheep.jpg

Oooh yes, the galler/forum upload works okay. This sheep still makes me shudder... Strange how it doesn't really look real

You could add a spectrum of colours Jon - such as GREEN to go with the RED

Just right for tent arguements in technicolour

I must say these new improvements are great and had i known it was in the pipeline i wouldn't have sparked of the discussion about chat rooms, Well done all

Oh one other nudge ,

When you use the LATEST POST's link or any of the others in the top bar you can't re-use them,

I.E. Just after i posted  i wanted to go back to LATEST POSTs but its highlighted in red and can't be re-used  i have to click another one then go back to it
