> bugger. never thought of girl's boots

Don't worry, I didn't either. I just kept trying boots on until I found a pair that fit and were comfortable. I think it was the lass serving that suggested I try them (possibly in desperation). The bit about calf muscles etc. is post-purchase rationalisation of why they're comfortable.

I can't imagine they make ladies boots up to a size 12!

I've ordered some X-sock skiiing, hope they will do the job.

I'm in the second generation T3s for everything Pete, touring and on piste. I think Scarpa still make them but nowhere in this country seems to import them anymore - I guess they'd rather sell you a pair of T4 / Garmont Excursions for touring AND a set of T2s for the piste!! (Which I guess is what'll happen when I need to replace mine  )

 .

Anyway, going a bit OT there, sorry......

to stay OT on that track:

T3s have died out in Norway as well, but unless your downhill skis are really beefy you should be able to get away with T4s on them as well. A few of my friends here in Norway use them on their downhill equipment as well.

I'm just hoping that I'll get a few more seasons out of my second-hand, slightly oversized, exremely comfy Garmont Garas before having to fork out for a new pair...

Hi parkyagain. No, I've never been skiing before. If it's anything like the time I went ice skating then I'm sure the boots will be mighty uncomfortable! lol

Socks sound like very important too. I'm learning all the time.  Thanks also for the tips from everyone on beginners' slopes here.

even learning to ski you get quite hot so don't be tempted to wear too much, or at least have layers that you can take off.

it's great fun, especially the falling over for no apparent reason; which affects skiers of all abilities! perpare for your calves and knees to hurt; knees especially but the pain ;-( goes after a while.

boots can tend to be uncomfortable because they are done up too tightly. they're not going to fall off because you're standing in them. in fact, with ski tuition at all levels you practice some things by undoing your boots!

have fun.

Thanks Parky Again. Some good advice there. I will definitely go with someone experienced or else I'd end up looking like Bambi on the slopes!

Brings to mind that awful saying, 'no pain, no gain'!

have some lessons. that said, they can be hit and miss. i had three different teachers until i was allocated to one that just explained things properly and showed how simple it is. the problem is getting a teacher who doesn't teach absolute beginners all the time. they just can't seem to explain things very well because they do everything on "auto pilot".

now i've progressed to merely awful i need to practice carve turns. on my own at first and then getting a lesson or two.

i've stocked up on glucosamine!
