I'm curious as to what people use as a camping pillow? The classic seems to be stuff spare clothing in a stuff sack. But then does this go in your bag hood, or under it? What clothes do you use?
Or if like Dave (ID) and are a big softie you carry a squeaky Ajunglak glowing orange thing.
Or if a minimalist like Ed, carry some sort of balloon that weights 3g or so.

carry a pillow! down filled, soft, comfy, packs small. Not done so recently but have in the past. Sleep better and feel far more refreshed for the good nights sleep than any weight saving would give me.

Ajungilak blow-up soft fluffy yellowy thing. Yum!!

If it is wet - clothes placed under the hood. If it is dry then I roll said clothes up in my jacket to fashion a pillow and place that under the hood. Or, if in the car, a.......... Pillow!

I have a small pillow but need to sleep quite high (otherwise I snore!!) so I put the pillow on top of a fleece which I put over my rucksack. Quite comfy really!

 |
if I could sleep on my back I'd probably do without a pillow - only need pillow cos I sleep on my side. side sleeping is pretty rough when camping in my experience. I just seem to have a pathological inability to sleep while lying flat on my back.

Heck Office manager! I hope you have a high tent for that combination! I tend to use a down or synthetic jacket in a stuff bag only rolled once, so it doesent trap air. And prefer it in the hood so when I move about or slide to the bottom of the tent I dont loose it.

I am one of those fortunate people that can sleep on more or less anything. I sleep well on my back even without a pillow. Generally, I bung a spare fleece into my sleeping bag stuffsack and that goes outside my sleeping bag hood. I'll usually be on it when I go to sleep but often wake up the following morning with it miles away!

It just doesn't feel right. It isn't a problem when in a tent on grass, but a right pain in the hip when on a hard surface.

I sleep well on my back... until I am awoken by my wife poking me to stop me snoring. Don't snore if I'm on my side, so tend to sleep better on my side... Just fill the pit's stuffsack with spare clothes and use that for a pillow. Pete.

Ajungilak blow-up soft fluffy yellowy thing. Yum!! i have that too and also have the cover that goes over the thermarest.i stuff the pillow in it and extra clothing, the cover stops it all moving in the night.i need my pillows high otherwise i get pain in my neck because i broke it a few years ago.
|
 |
eeek, you broke your neck? Lucky your still alive and able to move Ray, arent there like 7 ways to break it, 5 fatal or something horrendous like that?
|
 |
I can think of several ways to break which doesn't mean fatality. Lots of very scary pictures on my pen drive for teaching students.

Rolled up fleece etc, or if its dry lay my flece on my rucsack and pop my head down on that. If the wifes around i can always ................................. nick hers

16g
...better than those heavy Agungy things...... Sigh; do you want one?
|
 |
Nah I'm alright cheers Ed. I tried using a dry bag as an air pillow a few times by filling it as best I could with air, and then rolling it a few times, it did hold the air but I found it really quite uncomfortable. Your things might be more comfy, but, I reckon by having multiple uses for my dry bag, I am actually saving a whole 16g Ed. So, I win.

hi gear micro camping pillow- it's tiny and fits in the sleeping bag stuff sack. fleeces are always lumpy, socks are worse, i often use my down jacket as a blanket. i sleep on my side and the pillow is pretty useless to tell the truth but it provides a soft pad to put over something else. i can't use blow-ups, they're too firm even if they're under inflated if that makes sense.

Not soooooo fast young Smeg....who knows what multiple arcane uses I might have for something inflateable in the privacy of my tent.... And I recyle clingfilm as I go too - how cool is that ....

About as cool as a compound fracture in the death zone
