 Having seen these online I've been interested in trying a pair. Cotswold stock the shoe version, but don't list the Mid on their site/catalogue, but when I was in a store a week or so ago I mentioned the Mids and they had a look in their stock database to see that there were 3 pairs of 11s and 1 pair of 12s in their warehouse. He said he'd see if he could get them to the store and I've just had a call to tell me that they're in so I'll pop over on Saturday to try them! I like the idea of an eVent shoe. My feet get too hot for GoreTex and I want something that's good for hill walking, but not a full on leather boot... Any other recommendations?

 i've found event to be much better than goretex. you'll still get hot feet but it will take much longer to get there.

 Look for something with no waterproof liner at all, perhaps? eVent may be more breathable than Goretex but the eVent membrane is still a lot less breathable than if it wasn't there at all. In light footwearwet feet is considerably less of a problem than boots, because there's less stuff to rub and what there is isn't so stiff. Our local TK Maxx (Dundee) had a load of eVent Keen shoes in last time I looked. (Didn't try them on, don't line waterproof liners in shoes...) Pete.

Ideally I want something higher cut than shoe, but not a full tradional boot so that leaves the 'mid' style I've got some very lightweight TNF Boas and they only need to see water and your feet are soaked, but I much prefer wearing a lighter approach shoe to a full boot. I've got some Eastern Mountain Sports (US brand) Goretex shoes and they are great, but being a shoe they are not 100% compatible with gaiters and I think a higher cut would solve that problem...

What you say is true, but it depends when and where you want to use them too. Although I'm happy to get wet feet in an unlined trail shoe in the summer I certainly wouldn't want to get wet feet on a long day out at this time of year.....

 Given the choice I'd always go for a shoe without a membrane. This however, often isn't possible as most manufacturers like to have a goretex badge on their products as a selling feature wether or not it's necessary.

I've just had a look at the sites for Brasher and Asolo and both brands have 'gtx' in virtually every boot name!
How waterproof can fabric boots be without a membrane?
Merrell appear to do a number of shoes/boots that aren't encumbered with a membrane yet claim to be waterproof eg:

My girlfriend has a pair of Salomon Elios Mids and they are really nice apart from the fact they are Goretex!
Has anyone got any experience of eVent boots to know how much better, if any, they are than Goretex?

 Even nicer is the fact that unlike a lot of shoe and clothes manufacturers, there's a Lady Voyageur Mid too (though I keep thinking of it as Voyeur  ) Edited to add: Chief, I have Kayland Contact 1000 boots with event liner. Hard to draw a direct comparison because my GTX lined boots are full grain leather and I don't have any other fabric boots. But I like to wear them in the summer precisely because they're a bit less sweaty than the others. However, that may be as much to do with fabric / leather as event / gtx!!

The bit I don't quite get is the point of a non-waterproof 'Mid'. A Mid makes sense if you want waterproof because it'll cope better with any paddling through streams as well as giving you a chance of making a good overlap with overtrousers or gaiters. But if you're not after the waterproofing then why not take the lighter weight and less encumbered feeling of a low cut shoe? I can't imagine the mid provides any better ankle support (certainly not from my experience of them vs shoes), especially since that comes primarily from the heel cup and under-foot support. I suppose some folk might prefer a bit of protection for their ankle bones to guard against knocking them on rocks, or more chance of keeping out gravel, or even protection from biting nasties.... hmmm, have I just answered my own question?

My personal reasons for getting a mid are precisely the better overlap and improved 'wading' abilities, hence a waterproof version is distinctly preferable.
There's a logic which says a light, fell running/approach shoe with an eVent liner would be more breathable than a heavy fabric boot with the same membrane. Is that correct?

 Not necessarily, but it'll dry quicker. And, eVent liners feel warmer on my feet than Gore ones. The Targhee Mids are great btw.

I'd agree with ptc*. I've got Targhee shoes and they seem to make my feet hotter than GoreTex boots or shoes.

I think the market for walking footwear is very conservative. If you're going for a walk you need boots, so you buy something that looks more like boots. People will wear clumping great things just to dander round a country park for half an hour, for no other reason than it's walking off tarmac, and that is something one uses boots for... Pete.

Ok, so that's 3 thumbs up for the Targhee II Mids despite being warm. The question is, how breathable/waterproof are they? I've only been able to find a couple of non-Goretex boots, Raichle have a couple as do Merrell, otherwise they all seem to be GTX. I noticed Hi-Tec advertise a lightweight Sympatex boot, is this any good?
