How to make Meths Stoves Q&A

My kitchen smells of badly singed meths.  Can't imagine how that's happened.  Wondered about making a mini stove from red bull cans - but I've made it too mini and there's no space between the curves of the burner and the fuel cup.  I'm wondering if that's part of the problem with my first penny stove - too much distance so the fuel's not getting hot enough to boil  and prime the stove.  I'm also still getting lots of pops and fuel sprays which is not optimal.  I test on the hob so it's not a fire risk at home, but in a tent would be another matter.

I can build a stove in about 15 minutes or less.  I made my first side-burner at night on a campsite in Wales after being in the pub, using just a penknife, and sitting on a bench, in the dark, drinking beer.  Which provided the cans.  Wrote cp.

I always thought of you as a bit of a MacGuvyer of the diy outdoors kit there cp!Remember in the tv shows of his? Where he could at a moments notice improvise very quickly something really most useful, out of practically nothing, to get him out of any troubles. Good stuff!

> My kitchen smells of badly singed meths

lol.  But surely, it's badly sung meths...?

What sort of burner are you making?  Closed top, open top, or side burner?

TBH, I've never experienced pops or fuel sprays except with side burners that get a bit carried away and piss liquid fuel out of the side ports...

> and there's no space between the curves of the burner and the fuel cup

Open top?

Stop chatting and get building, man...

I'm more a Dukes of Hazzard man, really...

Modified Penny stove.  Crimped the can lovely and it slid into place beautifully, just it's place was too low.  If you think 2 can bases, 1 inverted then put together so you have 2 concave surfaces curving towards each other.  At the apex of the two curves they are meeting with no gap.  I need to make a stove somewhere between my first two attempts in terms of size.

I've just been in the local Dry Cleaners shop.  The customer before me was moaning away in a loud voice about what the shop had or hadn't done to her dress.  She ended every sentence with "and don't think you're ever going to get any more business from me" or words to that effect.

When she finally left the staff breathed sighs of relief and turned to a real life paying customer - me.  Hardly the best start to scrounging a few wire coathangers to make potstands.

We've got a good stack of wire coathangers Frum, if you're going to be around Dartmoor next month I could take a few down?

Ah, yes, that it a little too low...

I think with mini cans, it's better to make them about the same height as for normal cans, even if this does make them seem more 'boxy'.  The burner gets too close to the fuel otherwise, and things get a bit mad...

Just finished the latest (paper) Caldera Clone, and I reckon my locking mechanism should work nicely...

Thanks for the offer Roger, but the shop very kindly gave me a big handfull of hangers and refused to let me pay anything.  And when those hangers are gone there are lots of other cleaners in the area.

CP, have you found a source of ali. sheet yet?  I ask out of curiosity, not because I have any to offer you.

Red bull cans are a little tricky - they don't have much of a rim round them, so getting the jets placed is quite problematic.  I'll try a further 330ml tin stove after my weekend of late shifts.

No.  Not that I've actively been out looking yet...

I can see myself graduating to cardboard...  Still, if is catches alight, the pan will fall and put the fire out...

Searching for 'oven liner'... the only sensible reference so far is Pimp That Snack...

Nothing else for it then - two extra parameters for your program.  Height and width for each 'sheet' of ali cut from beercans and joined together to make your clone.

Would Aluminium sheet 0.45mm thick be light enough do you think?

I downloaded this places stock list but its got no prices. I suppose you would have to phone them.

The lightest listing on the stock list for Aluminium sheet is

Length 6' x width 3' gauge 0.45mm

Alu shim 30cm x 30cm x 0.15mm

Comes in nice colours too. Mine would have to be Alpkit red to go with my Mytimug.

Let us all know how it performs then please there Charles! Also, by the way, did you check out the link that I dug out for you, to try to go someways to answering your difficult fuels question that stumped us all last week here?
