Kate, yep,it is a bit steep up pen y fan when approaching from that direction. We did the whole horseshoe(15 miles ish) a few weeks ago with the folks from the 'other' forum, starting at talybont reservoir...lots of re-ascent,it was pretty busy up there then too. Thanks for being so patient with me Jules, really enjoyed the day, looking forward to the gower tomorrow.

If the weather's nice it's always swarming on the big hills. I prefer walking in Forest Fawr and the Black Mountain (just up from where Jules lives) as it's much quieter - did Fan Frynych and Fan Fawr last saturday and didn't meet a soul on the west of the A470.

Do most of my walking in the black mountain/fan brycheiniog area, although living near carmarthen these days,I originally come from the upper swansea valley, spent quite a lot of my time in them hills, never get bored of 'em.Went on a nice long circular walk a few weeks ago from cwmgiedd -camarthen fan-fan brycheiniog-fan hir-cribarth,its a great route to do.especially in winter!
Sinc Giedd's one of my fave places in the whole BBNP. My favourite circuit is Fan Hir, the whole escarpment, then cutting south to the footpath that heads south-east and takes you back to Glyntawe. c.21km of varied landscape and usually pretty quiet. I've been on top of Fan Hir at 8am - fantastic!!
Aye,its mighty nice up there early in the morning. One of my favourite bits of mountain up that wat too,'the sleeping giant'.
Kate, went to get some gear for Stus bike. Tarren, thats OK,someone did it for me, well several poeple to be honest. see you tomorow.
yep, lots of good advice and stuff from everyone...I'm off to practise the knots now!
Ok I'm back home now, thanks to Jules for organising this. Thanks for Will for the route up S4a. NICE. Hope you all found the quick route back that I took, only half hour to car. But anyway, I really enjoyed myself and look forward to the next meet of the newly formed South Wales climbing club via OM.
Another thoroughly enjoyable day...I'm hooked. Ta Simon for the loan of the helmet, and thanks to everyone again for their help and words of encouragement, cant wait 'till next time
No prob, look forward to another time, 3 cliffs maybe. Had a great day, sorry you had to leave so soon Simon, Ward finsihed with a VS with an interesting bit in the middle.
Sorry I missed it. I've got some catching up to do next time.
Dunno about climbers Jules but this weekend your about to get inundated with SARDA england dogs. National training course being held this weekend in and around BBNP. Were staying at near Penycae - any good pubs nearby
Hi Wayne, there are a couple of decent pubs in that area, nearest is probably the 'ancient britton' and you have the 'gwyn arms' a little further up the road near to dan yr ogof showcaves. Its a beautiful area, look out for the sleeping giant!
I didn't think much of the food in the Ancient Briton when I was up that way last year. The Gwyn Arms was much better. Never mind the sleeping giant, watch out for the dinosaurs!!
Its not for me. I wont have time for the pub!! Dodge and I are up for pre-assessment o it will be 2 pints of Guiness, a bag of chips and bed by 22:00 Hrs
Is that 2 pints of Guinness for the dog, Wayne? Best of luck to the pair of you.
I've heard that the Penycae Inn does very good food too. I've not been there myself but it was recommended by others.
The Pencae does do great food but its resturant food not Pub Grub. Its not expensive for the quality of what you get but when we go there its posh frock and stilletos, ( for Stu at any rate ) Its not the sort of place you would go all grubby after a day on the hills. The Gwyn armes does more what you want, good pub grub, lots of chips, well cooked. Lots of calories for hungry people. Trek, will let you know when we get together again, Jules
Got some good deals in Field and Trek in Swansea on shoes, harnesses , belay devices, helmets.
Aye Jules,I'm off down there on saturday with some money to spend!
