 Camp Fire Safety Tips. Some important stuff here! We seem to have lost a lot of the real meaning and traditional values of a campfire in Europe today. Whereas in America the whole idea of a campfire is much more involved, tied in deeply to that old style historical background of the frontier lifestyle, and country values of the original old homesteaders and settlers; that pioneered the drive to colonise the Americas, over two hundred years back ago now.

I sure do love and appreciate a good campfire, either alone or as a part of a social gathering, shared with like minded outdoors loving folks too; as there is really something most deeply spiritual about a campfire at nightime in the wilds I do feel, anywhere at all in this world! It is like a cultural contact point stretching back to the times and peoples past for me. And of course it can be eminently practical as well, of course - foods cooked and warmth upon a cold night being felt. Fire is life, as many say, and seeing it dart and leap and consume the wood of the fire there, you can easily see why they said that!

 Best campfire ever... Me and my mates on our D of E practice in the Yorkshire Dales... Method - Camp near the Settle-Carlisle line at Aisgill. Collect track-side junk such as a handy metal grid and assorted concrete blocks. Build the blocks into a four-square wall, leaving gaps for air. Collect any old scraps of paper, bits of wood, and most importantly of all, lots of cast-off coal beside the track, from the good old days of steam. Lay the fire. Light the fire. Enjoy all the comforts of a real coal fire in the outdoors, while assorted pans come to a rolling boil on the metal grid. Next morning - Lob all the assorted railway junk back onto the railway. (No, obviously, NOT on the tracks. Don't want a derailment on our consciences!) Continue the walk. On the whole though... I prefer my fires to be in bothies... rather than outside.

.jpg) Once stopped at the Red Squirell campsite Glen Coe and they allow campfires. Great for keeping the Scottish midge at bay and no need for head torches . I got so drunk that night that i was staggering to the showers the next morning which sobered me up until i had to walk/stagger back to my tent..Then later drove upto Lochness for a Loch side wildcamp got there and fell asleep for about 2 hours. Another time myself and a fellow OMer Ray Saunders wildcamped on the shores of Loch Etive but i had been here before so i knew it had a big stone old fire place,we took a Wock with us and mince,chicken and two jars of curry sauce,pitta breads and some extra chillies,we banged it all together washed it down with some beers and must say it was the best wildcamp curry i have ever had

Wont be matey what with the Skye trip next week it is draining the piggy bank,will try for the next one tho . As for tentage well i got some new poles but they were not the right ones so im just making them fit at work and the fly well im not in need of it now what with two other tents so will sort it out after Skye.looking at maybe a new tent instead

 Had a lovely campfire going next to stream in a wooded Exmoor valley campsite one sunny evening-we somehow ended up spit-roasting a skull using it's long curled horns-the smell of melted brain dripping onto the fire somewhat ruined the atmosphere Apart from that, great having campfires
