Mine your own titanium... breed your own silkworms...

I mean... c'mon... the whole idea of BUYING your gear is that you get to spend more time in the outdoors and less time hacking your fingers off and wasting time stuck indoors!

Spot on, Paddy.

Some people just don't get the whole 'division of labour' thing.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Division_of_labour

Mind you, according to Franz Borkenau, it was a great increase in division of labour occurring in the 1800s after the Industrial Revolution that introduced the abstract category of work, which may be said to underlie, in turn, the whole modern, Cartesian notion that our bodily existence is merely an object of our (abstract) consciousness.

Don't you hate it when that happens?

Paddy: whilst I like to spend time in the outdoors, sadly, I have to work during the week, otherwise I wouldn't be able to spend time in the outdoors (or I'd be spending all of my time in the outdoors, cold, hungry and destitute).  So I spend my evenings creatively, towards outdoors activities.

Jake: some people like to design and make things.  I agree that it's not economically efficient, but my spare time is free, and it does mean that I get things exactly as I want, and not how someone else has made them.

> it was a great increase in division of labour occurring in the 1800s after the Industrial Revolution that introduced the abstract category of work

Nonsense.  Even hunter-gatherers have to 'work'; hunting, gathering, tool making.  Introducing agrarian society reduced the amount of spare time people had.  As technological developments occurred, specialisms arose; smith, weaver, potter, cooper, wheelwright, butcher, baker, candlestickmaker...

All the industrial revolution did was to impose regulation on when work periods occurred, driven by the need to keep up with the machines.

Hmmm... "the need to keep up with the machines"

That sound like me running down the last bit of the hill in order to get the last bus home!

Having been prompted by Trev to have a look at the site, I couldn't help but laugh at this idea for home made bicycle panniers.

No good leaving a bike equipped such as these in a UK park, they would end up full of plastic bags of dog poo!

Which must be why - big clue there, Tony - I didn't flag up every single diy idea on there, you see! That design as is would also fill up with water when it rains probably, would it not! Unless you drilled holes at the plastic bins base, and then put a diy cloth bag handmade around them maybe, and then they would no doubt work out quite well, for a while at least. Not a good example of diy ingenuity of design though I will grant you. And might I say, not at all typical of most designs for diy outdoors stuff by any means whatsoever. It should be said!
