Inov8 shoes
Which pair?

Mike - my mrs has the mizunos; cushioning is great and not soggy - there's a kind of plate in the heel. Sole is  grippy - kind of flattened off studs, which is why they're good on paths. I've had some roclites - didn't really like them on the hill as they're not as grippy as my mudclaws, but they would be fine trail shoes, if they fit. The Flyrocs are an alternative. Some of the models can bash your ankle, so check that out - do them up tight and jump about. The top two lace holes are high and close together and there are  at least five different fancy lacing options to have hours of happy fun with - see here. I've found that although the shoes dry quick, your feet themselves don't - the sides of the shoes are absolutely impervious to water, so once your sock is wet, most of it stays that way. The tops are mesh though so the ventilation from above is excellent.

Cheers ALS. When you say the sides of the shoes are impervious to water, are you just meaning the Flyrocs? I've still got a 20 year old pair of Walsh's in the cupboard, i may end up digging them out!

Nope - pretty much all of the models have  sides that effectively behave like a rand  - tough, and abrasion resistant to be sure, but not a drop of water will pass out, but plenty will get in the top through the mesh. Walshes and decent wool socks let my feet dry a lot quicker.  And walshes are better to scramble in. I just like the mudclaws 'cos the grip from the studs is sensational, and they are a little more forgiving, specially on rocky paths, than my PB2s. Why not dig out your walshes, get 3 pairs of the fantabulous Running Bear socks for a tenner, and see how you get on?

I find terroc 330s fit great on me and accomodate my wide forefoot but roclite 315s have a narrower toe box hence not so good  -   for me. I use the low profile blue superfeet with them and find them great and they drain and dry pretty quickly. They seem to have a lower rand and sides than some of the others. The flyroc 310s look like they're made on a similar last and I'm also tempted to try the roclite 295s to see if the toe box is any better. If not I'll just stick with the 330s 'cos I know they work for me.

Those Mizuno Wave harriers look nice, but do they come in any other colour than SCARYBANANA!!! - I don't think I could get used to that..

No-one on here is mentioning Salomon shoes much. I quite fancied giving them a go for longish off road walk/runs, especially the pro ultra 3d xyz = mcsquared ones, +, or whatever they call themselves. The wider version of one of their trail runners?

I think SCARYBANANA!!! is actually a rather fetching colour for a shoe

I like the look of the Mizunos. I'm trying to find local stockists. Not easy!

I have an older version of the Salomons and found them a bit 'sloppy'. Not good for traversing. Very comfy though.

Are these the same Wave Harriers that also come in a fairly muted red shade? Hmm, might give 'em a punt.

For what it's worth, I'm a bit of a fan of inov8s. My fave pair for all round traction, comfort etc is the Roclite 315. I have a pair of the roclite GTX things, the blue/yellow trim ones, and whilst they are comfy, my feet do get hot in them.

I also found the waterproof quality to be more of a hindrance than a help - spent half my time dancing around bogs and puddles, in a vain attempt to stop water getting in over the top! It will anyway, so really you're better off with a quick draining shoe, like the 315.

If the Terrocs had a bit more cushioning, they'd be my favourites though.

Mick and Mike - the yellow wave harriers took me back to the 60s too! but my wife's ones are blue and the guys ones i've seen are grey and red like here. If there's a colour change it might mean you can get the older version cheap. The Running Shop in Aberdeen say they have them, as do Greaves or Achilles Heel in Glasgow, and Run and Become in Edinburgh, and mebbe The Running Company in Bridge of Allan.

Cheers ALS. They are only £30 here. Must be old stock. I actually like the yellow ones.

The idea is to get them filthy anyway! A nice zoom about the cairngorm plateau should seed to that.

I've done a fair bit of surfing and there seems to be 3 models of the Wave Harrier for sale. The newest model looks to have better ventilation and socks will dry quicker. The hunt is on.........

Mike - that's £30 if you take size 12!

The newer models seem to be Harrier 'WT' ones, which is for Wet Traction as far as I can make out - seems they heard about people going on their arses on wet rock and so have taken steps to rectiy that particular problem.

I just looked on one site, and it implied that they weren't for 'heavy' runners, which I assume means chubbers like my good self (actually it's 90% muscle...). But, I don't have any probs with my inov8s, which are pretty light shoes, so is it going to be a problem? I was getting quite excited about the Harriers!

A local shop will order in the Mizuno's and Roclite 305's for me to try if i want. Either that or travel farther.

As far as I can tell the Roclite 295s have the same toe box as the flyroc and the terroc, which is good news for me because I love them.  I have just bought a pair of 295s to replace my Roclite 320s.  I'll keep you posted on how they fair up.

I read on a US website, that the Roclite 305's are made on the same last as the Terrocs. Hopefully that will make them a bit wider in the forefoot. I can't take a chance ordering online as i take a size 9 in my New Balance shoes, a size 10 in my Keen Targhees, and size 10.5 in my Salomon XA's!

I've just been for a run in my new 295 and I have these words for you all---> SEXUAL.

My new shoe of choice.  RIP 315s

They feel very much like a flyroc on the upper and still has all the cushion and grip of the 315s in the sole.

Now we'll have to see how long they last.

How 'roomy' are they in the forefoot Ian, compared to the others?
