" no return to boom and bust." there hasn't been. not of the government's making. any country is powerless aganst global ecvents.

energy prices go up, everything goes up. everything produced uses energy. hence the cost of production rises. doesn't matter a damn where it's made or grown.

guy fawlkes tried boom or bust.

> So where do we raise taxes to provide for the shortfall?

Err... we don't.

The Budget is (I presume, but who knows how the morons calculate it), based on predictions of tax income.  This prediction will have assumed a price for fuel, not based on the current rises.

So, if the fuel price rises, the duty income also rises.  Either the Chancellor has wads of extra cash to waste on daft schemes, or he can reduce the duty level on fuel such that his income is the same as the original budget forecast.

As Parky said, it's not rocket science...

> any country is powerless aganst global ecvents.

Indeed.  And that's why I think claiming responsibility for 'economic miracles' is a load of cobblers; I'm not convinced that Chancellors have that much real influence over a country's economy.  Granted, being surprised that scrapping the 10% tax rate will have a negative effect on people, and will be unpopular, is hardly rocket science.  Why it came as such a shock to them, I have no idea.  Welcome to the Real World, Gordon...

If you're going to claim responsibility for good things on a global economic scale, then I'm afraid you have to accept responsibility for bad things on a global economic scale...

F off - buy a biro and some paper! If you're that much in demand with the "in crowd" then you must have enough money to eat haute cuisine every night! Young people. At least I can console myself by remembering I am going to outlive you all!

Marcus, what can I say, I'm just in high demand as always!

NPC, I still think I'm young!!! Even at 32... I even got ID'd for Meths in B&Q last week, seriously!

On the political thing, theres a very simple answer, the money is lining corporate companies fat cats, simply go to the financial sites and look at the businesses business postings for the last quarter and you'll see where the money is going. Problem is they forgot the key section where the money in rich companies goes back through the PEOPLE then we spend and put it back in again! Starting wage sin Manchester are exactly the same as what they were several years ago yet every single thing has gone up way over inflation, go figure!

You only got ID'd cos they thought you were a jakey, Jamie!

When I go walking I get my blood sucked by ticks, midge, keds and clegs - all parasites.

Every human culture has developed human parasites that feed on the populace and then , unlike the above invertebrates, have the capacity to laugh at the mugs that are keeping them in clover. Even better, most of these will be just fine thank you no matter what the financial meltdown. Bear market anyone?

We need a DEET equivalent for the leeches

Give that canister to Kinley. He knows what to do with it.

Why do I keep reading that as BNP?  They do look as though they're lining up in front of the Fuhrer...
