CB, not sure the same principle does apply. Also not sure we should continue with this line on a outdoors appeciation site. Would love to debate the relative leadership attributes of MT and Hitler but feel face to face and with a pint to hand would probably be more convivial. I agree not all leadership is necessarily good. Nevertheless I think MT .............. no, stop. Who would you prefer to take out on the hill??? for a gentle stroll and chat.

... Who would you prefer to take out on the hill??? for a gentle stroll and chat. Kylie.

I'd have that Muriel Gray. She's a fit lass and I bet she likes a drink. Her or Ghandi, can't decide.
Yes, given the choice. Not sure MT would make it and himself certainly wouldn't!!
 Yes to Hitler?
 Are you into motor-racing?!
Yes to Hitler? Only in springtime in Germany.
Well he's a lovely-looking boy that's for sure. He's dropped his mobile though.
Bill Did you manage to track down those gold hot pants, slightly soiled?
You mean these? I'm keeping them.
I'm spinning around, get out of my way!
Ooh I like them. Aren't they Kylie's though?
 They were.

Yeah I let CB take a pic of them last time he was in my house. She left them here ages ago! I a agree on the political front, I don't think Cameron will do any better. But the thing about Gordon Brown is that he isn't dealing with someone elses mess, he is dealing with his own!! As Chancelor it was him who told the world to be freely with money and spread wealth by handing out credit to every Britain with half a brain! ( myself included ) Now he's in power he's put himself in the chair to answer and sort out his problem, he should have just gone into hiding! And all he has done is try and deal with banks and corporate companies and they all just laugh at him now! So instead he comes pointing his finger at us innocent Britains and blaming us as were an easy target, like yesterday " Britains need to waste less food " yeah cause thats the answer to all our problems isn't it, thats why Tesco who continue to make billions need to add 40p onto everything!!! And Shell and BP who still make billions need to keep rising fuel prices!!! Or maybe Britains need to get on our public transport available as he said recently, yes thats right Gordon its all our fault for not cramming ourselves onto the already pants and over crowded transport system!!! < goes away to take cold shower and give up on politics as its all a load of nonesense run by complete idiots >

I don't think they are idiots, but they do keep doing stupid things. But yes, we need to stop wasting food. Supermarkets throw away huge amounts of perfectly good food because of arbitrary sell-by dates. FFS, salt with a sell-by date. Why? "This mineral water has been percolating through the mountains for 10 000 years. We then bottle it so you can enjoy its naturally purified quality. Best before Sept. 2008." I mean, what is that about? Its bloody water, has spent thousands of years filtering through rocks, and now its got a best before date! Then there's the food that gets thrown away before it even gets on the shelves - because it's not quite the right size or shape. Sell apples by the kilo, but they have to be the same size & degree of roundness. Sheer stupidity. [/rant mode]

Jamie, I kind of agree about Brown. But if you really want government to take on our current system of corporate capitalism, you won't get any answers from any of the main parties (and in our system the minor ones don't count, which judging by the ineffectiveness of what remains of the left and the worrying popularity of the BNP is probably a good thing, I'm afraid). In other words, don't go voting Tory cos you think they'll do any better!

Yep I agree with your sentiments CB, I read somewhere that every single molecule of water on the planet is "recycled" within a 48 hour period by some form or other. (Others than those molecules standing in airtight sealed containers or fozen!)

Can I just borrow Paddy's thread for a minute and pick up on the point about wasting food. People often confuse use by, and best before labels. Use by is ithe most important - this is the date you should eat a product by. If not you could become ill. If you've not eaten something by the use by date, play safe and chuck it out. Best before is more of a guide on quality. Food eaten before the best before date will probably taste better but you don't have to throw it away just because it's gone past the best before date. One exception to this is eggs because of salmonella, so with eggs it's safer to take best before as the use by date.
Sell by and display by dates are more for the benefit of the shops and used for stock control.

It's not my thread MoS - it just has my name on it! As for food... the only food 'waste' that ever leaves my house are banana skins and a mere dusting of breadcrumbs. I buy food to eat, not throw away!

I hate food waste too. I was brought up by parents who had experienced the war years and rationing. Waste was frowned upon and there was always a huge stock of tins in the cupboard. Of course we shouldn't have anything in our cupboards or fridge that has exceeded the 'use by' date - that's just poor planning. There's more information on labelling here. use by best before
