ARE PARKED CARS SAFE

I am visiting the lakes district shortly and may consider some long walks, maybe even try a wild camp if the legs are up to it.

I am wondering if 'as a whole' cars left at the roadside are safe overnight.

I wouldn't like to return to find a 2 wheeled car or worse ... no car

I'm not talking about a Porsche or anything fancy, just a plain old family saloon

I think there are more incidents of items stolen from cars than actual car thefts (or parts from). Take with you only what you're going to use and remove the parcel shelf or the 'sliding thing' in estate cars to show potential thieves that there is nothing inside to steal.

Were there any particular areas you were thinking of KK?

I think there's been a recent spate of thefts in the Castle Crag/Raven Crag area of Thirlmere.

Not going to Castle Crag area

Best not to give exact details I'm sure, but that's a good idea about leaving the car empty ... I suppose the same thing you would do wherever the car was parked

Are parked cars safe?

Not when they set them alight!

Or better still one of these http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=zOhfsTYuwvc

I once walked past 8 cars parked at the road head in Cwm Eigau- Carneddau, which had all had windows smashed and the interior trashed in the search for valuables , so I think Glynns suggestion is right.

On the other hand my car has never been touched during over a 1000 days left by the roadside in Wales, Scotland and the Lakes.

I used to take the rotor arm out and carry it with me but I cannot find it in my new car's modern engine!

Does anyone have any (sensible) ideas on how to disable a car.

disconnect one battery terminal and fit a dummy connection.

It isn't the valuables in a car, it is the diesel and catalytic converter accessible from outside your car you need to worry about.

Saying that I have never had my car looted in all the years I have been going hill walking! Different story parking in town centres though.

i've left my car and it's fine- showing it's empty is a good idea, glove compartment too. it helps if your car is a bit shitey or full of rubbish!

I had a bag of mints stollen once, they did the lock over just for a bag of mints...

Anyhow one of these would be useful.

I once had my car broken into and CD's stolen from it while it was parked on Crow Road in the Campsie Fells.

Anyone remember the aftermath of Foot & Mouth?

I knew it was all over when the Police reported...

"Theft from parked vehicles in the Lake District is now back to its pre-Foot & Mouth levels!"

So, Paddy, all we need to do to protect our vehicles is start a foot & mouth epidemic?

That would do it John!

I'd love to know what was happening behind the scenes with the criminal elements in the Lakes at that time. Were they lobbying for the lifting of restrictions? Did they put in an application afterwards for compensation for the loss of revenue suffered at that time?

One can only assume that they had to "work" a bit harder in the urban car parks!

There can be no definitive answer to your question. All I can say is that I've left our car in all sorts of weird and wonderful places in the LDNP and the YDNP and have never had any bother. On the other hand I have left it at Eaves Wood in the Arnside & Silverdale AONB and twice have had "attempted" break ins.

As previous posters have said leave nowt in view.

I was going to get a sticker made up that said " If i could afford valuables to leave in my car i wouldnt be driving this sh**** Micra" . I take my tom tom sat nav with me and all money.

Parky Again wrote (see)
disconnect one battery terminal and fit a dummy connection.

This then would lead to having to re enter your code for the car stereo,so maybe not a good idea.

the valuables in your car are now in the petrol tank.
