Hi When I have my rucksack fully laden and the hip belt done up, I would like to have my bum bag in front as it is very handy for small items, without needing to take the sack off and rummage around inside. I have tried my Lowe bum bag but the buckle has to be under the hip belt of the sack and is very uncomfortable. What I need is a bag with straps that I can velcro to the hip belt and can then easily undo if I need access to the central buckle. Do you know if such a thing exists and if so where can I buy it? Many thanks. Dawn

Sounds a bit doubtful. Why not just buy some add on pockets which fit onto the waist belt? E.g. http://www.backpackinglight.co.uk/product291.asp http://www.aiguillealpine.co.uk/cgi-bin/trolleyed_public.cgi?action=showprod_A040

according to my wife, a front bum bag should be called a fanny bag.

Lots of companies make pockets that you can add on to the hipbelt.

If it is at the front then how can it be a bum bag anyway? Even in America they don't wear Butt packs around their front. There are lots of seemingly cheap and nasty front pouch items about, but they are small and make you look like a car boot market type trader. I do wish some kind soul could come up with a good bit of civvie belt order, that could be worn comfortably with a rucksack hip belt too though. As yet I've not so far seen one anywhere at all sadly!

I think it is more of a concept that Dawn is offering here Trev. The ability to have front access to bits and bobs that neednt be in your rucksack. Such as sun glasses, map, wallet, compass, mobile phone, chewing gum etc etc .....

Yeah, I got that bit FB. All I was trying to say is that the ones I've seen thus far, that are designed to be worn at the waist front, all seem to me to be far too small to hold anything but a tiny few items of kit though. Certainly not big enough I feel to get in an OS map at anyrate.

Eh, I am sure you are aware Trev that a fanny in the USA is not the same as we lovngly refer to in the UK, and a bum bag is a "fanny pack" just like you wouldn't tell anyone in a New York bar that you are going outside to have a fag!

I know these things only too well though Tony. I watch a lot of American tv! (Fanny packs in the military in the States are termed 'Butt Packs' though, since their inclusion into the 1956 pattern US Army webbing arrangement; worn through the Korean war and Vietnam war and beyond even too. As the later ALICE - All-Purpose Lightweight Individual Load Carrying Equipment has a modern day army version of the older style butt pack, still worn in theatres of operation by US ground infantry forces today. If anything the Craghoppers mini packs for belt use are influenced in design first off by these such military kit things I reckon.) Especially I love American tv shows of the cop and supernatural varieties, my favourite show being The Medium, and more recently the dvd's I won of series 5 of The Shield cop show!

There was a long discussion about OMM chest pouches recently, something like that should be considered here shouldn't it? I use an army surplus gas mask bag slung round my neck and over one shoulder then hooked from a handy loop at the bottom of the bag to the rucsac strap by a carabiner to stop the bag moving about too much. I tried a (again army surplus utility) pouch on the rucsac waist strap but found it got in the way of swinging my arms and so messed up my gait and it was that prompted my use of the gas bag.

a front bum bag. It's called a sporran, isn't it?

Yes the yanks with a "fanny" pack what are they thinking? Dana Design from the US made a Kangaroo Pouch in 1998 that hung off the two straps that go on the side of your body by QR buckles so the pouch hung over the belt buckle ,usefull for small gear. You can also buy some small pouches and attach them on to the side of your packs belt ,you could use plastic tie cords which would make them quite permanent .

Hi everyone Thanks for your suggestions. Having lived in the States I am well used to the rather odd terminology used over there. It seems to me that manufacturers read these pages and should take the hint and design a pouch of a decent size, that can velcro with wide straps onto the hip belt so as not to interfere with arm movement, but can be set tight so it doesn't flop as you walk, aka the sporran. That is easy to attach once you have slung your pack onto your back and easy enough to rip off if in an emergency situation you need to take the pack off double quick and be large enough for those things we need on a regular basis. I wear a Paramo Velez smock which has an OS size front map pocket on the outside which I can access when wearing a pack, but I would like to have somewhere to keep my camera, hanky, energy bars, lightweight binos. A pouch such as I have described would do nicely. Come on karrimor, lowe, vaude, berghaus, crux how about it. If you want to know what to make I'll happily draw you a picture of what I have in mind....some chance. Dawn

Dawn as a manufacturer, i'll take notice just have to find the time. The big companies have to make large amounts of something to make it worth while yours Smamitman smamit Packs

I've got a couple of these from Mountain Laurel Designs in the US attached to my pack.

Hi Smamitman That's great. Really a good size bum bag, less the straps, water resistant if possible. Then sew two wide straps vertically with tough wide velcro on the ends. Put the pack on and adjust the hip belt. Feed the strap on the left around the belt and at the top secure the velcro. Do the same with the strap on the right. When its time to take off the pack, you could leave the left one in place, if you are right handed like me and just undo the right one and then take off the pack. If it was possible to have a clip on belt for the new front back, then it could also double as a regular bum bag for scrambling. On a long hike, ie 20-30 days, when the main pack could be upwards of 100 litres, it would serve as storage for a number of small items, gps, sat phone, energy bars, shades, etc that are two big for pockets and impossible to reach in the main pack without taking it off. If you do make one, please let me know and I will happily test it, review it and buy it! I am walking across Iceland next year and would find this invaluable. Dawn

Petesy has had a few interesting OMM items on his site recently, one of them was the soon to be in the shops 'Ultra Waist Pouch', which seems to fit the bill.

Dawn .You're better off wiyh 4 attachment points (from each front corner) and thick shockcord . Dogclips onto shoulderstraps D-rings and whatever to the rear of the hipbelt (so it follows the shoulderstrap down ) . More ease of movement , but still close fitting . Also if you can draw it a local machinist will make it for you , and you can save money and keep a small local business going . Jim

Hi Martin & Jim Been on the OMM site, thanks for that, their waist bag is no good as it still has straps for around the waist. The chest pack looks interesting, now if that could have the straps I describe it could be fitted to the hip belt. I might have to go with your idea of getting a machinist to make one up, if I can source the material. I certainly think that if such a pouch did exist, it would have a market. Being self employed and running a small business myself I agree whole heartedly with the idea of giving work to the small guy whenever possible. Thanks for all your help and suggestions which is greatly appreciated. Dawn
