The one way zip on my Microlight drives me nuts, looks like I'll be waiting for the newer version.

One thing that slightly concerns me about the new version is the 1200HH. The old SL3 (and probably the Hex) had a 2000HH.

I've always thought that 1200 is only just what is termed waterproof

Finally got a chance to field test the prototype two person winter nest at the weekend.

It worked pretty well. A few things need changing, but on the whole a promising first attempt

The weather turned horrendous during the night. 50mph+ winds and torrential rain. The shelter stood up to the wind well and looked pretty much the same the following morning as when I'd first pitched it, but it was extremely noisy, and not much sleep was had.

It did leak through the vents when the gusts were at there worst though, which is a known issue. This is the first time this has happened for me, and should be easy enough to sort out. I wonder if Golite have addressed this weak point on the new version?

Looks cosy Sean

Did the 'vented' rain get through the inner?

I was thinking of less/no mesh in the ceiling?  After all, never used to have it on old tents.  The inner fabric should be breathable....

What do you think about mid panel tie-outs on the outer for reducing wind noise?

The new one has them on the seams, which would be good for anchoring, but not stop flapping panels as well.

Ah, nuts to it, I just got one of the sale items from BPL, will address any issues as they arise. I'll be in the tent for the next six weeks or so as of Tuesday, so it should get a good workout.

MW -Off to china again?

could use a fraction of the money saved paying someone to fit an extra zip slider?

It only got in through the mesh, Mole. The solid panels are pretty waterproof - certainly enough to resist drips and splashes. The mesh is one of the things I'm going to change. I want to have just two panels as opposed to six.

We were discussing mid panel tie outs and to be honest I'm not sure. I can't make up my mind if stopping the panels from flexing with the wind would be a good or a bad thing. I was thinking doubling up on the intermediate pegging points would maybe be better at reducing noise from flapping. I do intend fitting some as a test though.

I suspect the fact that it can move so much contributes to it's ability to shrug off very strong wind when it doesn't really look like it should be able to. Kind of like a tree bending in the wind?

I reckon most tents probably will flap a bit unless they're geos Specially with gusty start-stop stuff...

Do you mean new peg points at 1/3's or 2 pegs at each mid point?

Thirds, Mole. So there's not as big a span of loose fabric.

Should help

Or 1/4's

or could just fix UL battens to each edge and use 12" timberlocks to floor every 6"

Hmm I wonder if they took on my idea of putting a hole in the back of the pole as well as those in the front so you can use a peg to use the bottom bit as an extender?

Not too happy with the new SL3, expected the vents to look more convincing really, the lighter and less waterproof material doesn't impress either or the pointless guy loops though I suppose in sonme situation that could possibly be useful to carry two or three lightweight guys for. The taped seams is the only positive bit I suppose considering most of us who have last years have needed to seal some part.

Suppose we won't know what the vents are really like until we see one up.

Don't know why they always use a photo to illustrate it that shows a huge gap at the botom of the fly, no one in this country ever really wants that gap. Its one thing I like about the older Hex is that it seems to go right down to the ground.

This thread being bumoed reminds me I need to get back out in mine again and soon!

Owen Thanks for the tip about the floors   - tempted to get one to cut in half to make  2 half inners.....

- unfortunately I've now exceeded my quota for gear spending this season

I used the floor as a quick and easy starting point for the two person nest, Mole.

The only problem with cutting one in half is that along the middle cut line you wouldn't end up with enough material to make the bathtub.

And besides, you'll be wanting a MunkyWorks Nest. You're far too busy to be spending time making your own

but wouldn't be too hard to stitch a strip of pu nylon along that edge and seamseal it....
