Hi Guys,
Your info on this has been great reading. Im thinking of getting an SL3 for when i depart for NZ where i plan to travel there from November to March (their summer) due to its light weight.
I have a few questions though.
How small does this tent pack down to? Does anyone have a pic of it packed up?
And does anyone know when the 2010 version will be available for purchase (apart from sometime in 2010!) ?
Your responses are greatly appreciated.
Al.

Hey Al. The shelter itself (outer) measures roughly 48cm x 20cm in it's stuff sack It can be squished waaaaay smaller than that though.

Sean, it looks great! Parky, that method of pegging I could have done with in Glencoe a few weeks ago when I had to use ruddy great big rocks to keep my pegs down! I've always been a fan of the 6g type titanium pegs and cros pegging them like that. While I'm in here, has anyone added better pegging points to their middle peg points on the SL3? The Hex has excellent pegging points in the inbetwwen bits, but the SL3 has some daft hoops. I was thinking of getting some bungeee types, anyone know which are best or if you can buy it in say a length then cut each one, also how are they best tied?

i'm not too sure if it shows up in the pictures but i actually double pegged out the original peg i.e. the extra looped end bits of dyneema were looped around the original y peg end and not through the pegging loop. i find that holds the peg better. did that make sense? erm...the y peg has the additional reinforcing pegging attached to it i.e. anchoring the y peg in the ground
Ah so the extra bit is actually pulling and holding the original sole peg?
I've tied a bit of bungee cord to the intermediate pegging points, Jamie. Maybe not as slick, but does the trick
Yeah thats what I was thinking of using but the thinner stuff. I s'pose you just tie it like you see them on TN tents a standard knot pulled real tight.
Yeah I use some 3mm cord. Double overhand knot. Works a treat

yes jamie. it holds the original peg in. it was an experiment at first. i just thought - double peg/guy the loop or double peg the peg. double pegging the peg makes the angle a right angle to the peg - thinking that would make any stresses coped with better. the tent loop pulls the ground peg at 45 deg. the double pegging stops the ground peg from pulling towards the tent. so the double pegging is only under load if the original peg starts to pull out. erm...all a bit garbled again...

You can't, Richard Bob at BPL.co.uk is maybe going to start offering something similar (see his earlier posts) but I don't think anything's definite yet. I'd love to market mine, but don't really see how I could do it profitably. I think it's too much of a niche product to be outsourced for mass production, and it would be too expensive to make them one at a time myself. Plus my sewing skills aren't good enough for me to be able to sell them to 'real customers'. If folks are paying good money for something they don't want stray threads and slightly wonky seams. Have a go. It's really not that difficult to knock up something that's a little rough and ready, but perfectly functional

I'd have to agree with sean the cost of materials depending on what you use can be relativly cheap think mine all in all came to about 35 quid but if i was to knock a few up i dont think the quality would be up to sellable standards, and i don't think i will quite perfect it, so i think keeping an eye on what bob is planning on selling is the best option.... tho be interested to see what price it sells for.

There must be loads of expert machinists in the UK who are out of work or doing other jobs since we don't actually make anything here anymore But then there's the problem with materials availability/licenses. Good article in TGO about making your own gear that touches on this subject.

i would love to make 1 but dont no were to start wot to use and were to get it and im also half blind i wonder if the are any alternative that would fit just as well like the duo mid inner any sugestions its a great shelter let down only by this i think and would be a shame to get rid becouse of no half nest but i may just have to and get a alternative
wot are my alternatives wot about using outer with bivy for sleeping bags but wot about the midges just need a way of using it so i have a place for muddy boots and stuff
would some one help me with instructions to buil a nest
I'll make you a mesh nest at cost if you want, Richard. I'd rather not make another solid one just yet as it was rather traumatic You need to accept that it won't be up to Hilleberg standards of finish though Edited for a surplus of 'thoughs'

Just popped back to check this thread. And have to say 'nice one' Sean on the latest inner Following on the chat we had, I am still pursuing various routes to get this made in the UK as I agree there MUST be some ex-pro machinists who could do the work? But they seem to be as rare as rocking horse do-do!! The pole extender is still going ahead, and I have a system now for 14mm dia poles and 16mm dia poles.
Can any of you Pacer people tell me the top dia of the lower and mid section please? And does the carbon and alloy differ? I can't see why it would, as the handles will only fit one section.
Also chatting to Alpkit last week, I understand the new China factory made the last pole sets and there are a few subtle differences between them and previous sets I have. I think it may only be section length but they don't have any samples to check for me.
The new 2010 SL3 should be with us Feb/March of next year and if I can pull it all together I expect I'll be doing a 'solo' set if possible. So I'm working to that date for the inner if at all possible.
Size wise I usually say the SL3 shelter only will crush down to the bulk of a small loaf, give or take a slice!
