sorry bob, i can't help with actual measurements (nothing to do an accurate measurement with) but the pacer alloy poles are completely interchangeable with my alpkit carbon poles - all sections.

Cunning MunkyWorks Winter Oook Nest™ now complete. Much the same as the all mesh version, except using slinky yellow pertexy stuff which is windproof and pretty water resistant. Small mesh panel for some ventilation at the top of the door and a slightly taller bathtub than the mesh nest. I've added hangers to lift the bathtub (pic 3) which weren't needed for the mesh inner, but this fabric sags a lot more. I've also shifted the door to the other side, as it makes more sense in relation to my sleeping bag zip. Weight is 630g. A bit heavier than the mesh version (50g or so). As with the mesh nest, it could be made considerably lighter with a silnylon floor and lighter body material, but even at that the whole package is coming in at just under 1500g including pole extending Doobrie™, pegs and outer
Very Tasty Nice work Sean Looks cosy - just like being in a proper tent

Hi Bob, Same as Parky, I don't have anything to take an accurate measurement of the pacer pole diameter either but the bottom two sections of a carbon pacer fit exactly into an Alpkit replacement carbon mid pole section - at least the version of the Alpkit poles as of about a year ago.

Can't do it now Bob but sometime over next few days I can take piccies of my Pacers ends against a white ruler. Broke my middle section last weekend falling down a hole in heather on Kinder only a tenner to replace the middle section though which I'm really chuffed with!

Tested the new nest last night in the garden. Couldn't wait for the weekend Initial thoughts are I'm pretty pleased with it. Fast to pitch, and two seconds of a job to unhook from the roof and drop, freeing up the entire internal space of the shelter for doing stuff but still retaining a groundsheet to sit on. Temperature was about 3 degrees I think, and one of those very condensationy nights; the outer had loads on it before I even got in. I was a tad concerned about it getting pretty wet because of the fabric I've used, but nothing formed inside the inner except for a tiny bit mid height on the large back panels. I reckon a small mesh panel at the top of this like the one above the door panel would solve that and would be easy enough to retro-fit. It's snug, but roomy enough for me and various bits and bobs, but perhaps a little short for someone much over 6'. There's enough clearance between the outer and inner to make the nest at least 6" longer though, but my thinking was as it's meant for winter smaller equals warmer. And lighter

Thanks Pacer people, you've answered the question and therefore this linking section will link a pair of Pacers together as well, by removing the lower section from each pole and linking the two upper sections with each other. However, my main concern or thoughts would be using the handle section to support the room and against the ground. Has anyone any simple suggestion that might help not put too much pressure on the shaped handle, or not bother?

I found some really ideal stuff in Go Outdoors last week for making some proper pegging point loops on the Shangri-La 3 in those pointless middle pegging points. Took me ages to find it as they put it in the caravanning section. I think its this on the website. It comes in a 5m length and I've only used a third of it. I've made three lots of 6 cords the right length and burned the ends to stop it fraying. I've tied mine on my tent and was gonna give BBF first dibs on the second lot of six as I owe him for the jam he gave me at Glencoe and I think I am seeing him next weekend. Does anyone want the other six? I don't want any money for them, they will go in a normal envelope first class so if anyone wants them then email me, first person who emails me can have them. If BBF dont want the six I have for him someone else can have them for free.

The pegging points don't seem superfluous to me Jamie? Or do you mean they are not very well done? Seem a bit better on the Hex than the SL3 from what I have seen. I like the idea of a flexible pegging point such as you and Sean have described.....but have yet to have a problem using the standard points (longer on the Hex I think?). What I do like is that you can cinch the shelter down tight, so cutting down on wind ingress in winter situations if you just use a floor. Can't help but think that mini line-locks would be better than elastics though - more adjustment when the sil sags - as against having to move a peg?
|
 |
To me they aren't even a pegging point? Its almost as if they couldn't be bothered, the funny little tabs they put on aren't even the right shape to take a peg. Each time I've had mine up its not sat low enough to even peg them down. I do need to try get mine erected so the skirt of the tent is lower to the floor. As those loops weigh less than a gram each I did wonder if putting a smaller one on aswell as the longer one may be a good idea. Hmm. I'm off for a few days around Crainlarich / Tyndrum area next weekend and gonna be using it for a few nights, still not decided if I'm going to bother with the nest yet? Hmm. Probably won't as I wanna experience it as a solo tent as I'm on my own, also want to cook in it and contemplating taking a meths stove.

 |
Incidentally I have hands like a hobbit so in the above piccie the loop may seem bigger than it actually is!

One of the things I really like about using adjustable poles like the pacers joined with a section of carbon fibre tube is that they stay adjustable. With a bit of care you can just raise the pole up a bit more when the sil sags, to retension all your pegging points together without even having to step outside (though maybe not a trick you'd want to risk in a storm)

bob, i've never tried supporting anything with both the handle ends of pacer poles. it's not the easiest with one handle until you get the hang of the angle that it need to be at so it doesn't slip. possibly quite difficult with a handle at both ends. i'll second what jim said.

hi not sure if this is right forum to join? thinking of buying shangri-la 3 for me and dog,any know if i could FIT my atko inner in somehow? many thanks peter ps been told next years model is going to have longer hoods? on vents is this a must are there problems with exzisting vents? ta peter
|
 |
There's no problem with the existing vents Peter, it's just that after the Golite testing squad experienced 'proper' english weather this year, they realised that an extra inch or two might improve a potetntial weak spot, when the rain does that horizontal thing it does so well at times !!
We haven't had leakage from that area to be honest. Just when there's been the ocassional blast and we are in an exposed place!

hi se@n did you get my pm

 |
hi bob i see that they are adding guys half way up ,just how stable are these ?hard one but trying to decide if to buy one now or wait for next years model?? only other important change i can see is double zip and possible the extra vent any idea on next years price? many thanks peter
|
 |
I think the guy points half way up have minimum practical use to be honest Peter in typical UK conditions, but that depends on if you have the extra pegs points on each panel pegged down., as this adds rock solid pitching in my experience.
The overall improvements are welcome to be fair. It comes down to the price point. No doubt we'll be doing some kind of promotion for the current model like everyone else shortly. Just checked the paperwork and there is no increase in the SRP for the 09 or 10 models £175.
The seam sealing will attract a lot of people, along with the weight factor and the double ended J zip.
As they say ' ya pays ya money .....'

hi bob wen will new hex/sl3 bee in stock 2010 model wot are diffrences wot are colours and will the nest floors ect fit from sl3 are will it be all new stuff hope not.

I'm fairly new to camping, outside of car trips to campsites and really like the idea of a tipi, I've been looking at the Shangri-la 3 however the price is slightly off putting, does anyone know of a cheaper alternative? Apart from the Argos tipi and Vango's range. Also am I right in guessing that the measurements for the shell and nest have four inches between them because the shell stands four inches off the ground? Thanks.

 Hurrah!!
My new stock of 14mm extender poles has now arrived looking very sexy (little things and all that!) and can be found on our site.
However as a little 'thank you' for people's help and feedback on this thread, I though it would be nice to give a couple away as samples for those who want to test them and try them out. Obviously these need to replace two 14mm lower pole sections of walking poles, so check you have the right size before emailing me with your address. (14mm Diameter or 45mm circumference)
So far they fit Alpkit, Mountain King, Black Diamond, and Trekmates poles. I think they also do Pacers but I need confirmation again, as I've just read the feedback above and now I'm not too sure.
Please email me at info@backpackinglight.co.uk and this will be first come first served.
