I'll get it off to you on Monday, Jim. No charge to you, Sir

Thanks Sean. The idea of being able to just have the door half way open sounds good to me. It should mean that it'll give a bit of a porch without rain coming in above me if I sit in the tent and do a bit of cooking

.JPG) sorted through some photos. Here is my '2 door' Hex with mods. The 'back door' was put in by Posh Totty/Oookworks over a year ago (and also a repair after abrasion damage in high winds). Very similar to the original door setup. It's good for summer use ventilation even with the full mesh nest, and obviously, access in less windy weather. (which it nearly always seems to be when I hit the hills!) I've added a couple of velcro tabs for the zip flap as it generally faces the windward side if used solo. With my solo half nest the back door is not accessible from inside. I'm in the (slow) process of making "3/4" solid nest with front porch area and rear back door. The most Recent Mods are - mid door peg points as described above - shock cord
- shock cord loops at the base of each door zip on the door panel - can hook these around peg and still crawl out of 'slit door' in wild weather.
- Mid panel tie outs for flap reduction in high winds. A short bungee section is advised for these to buffer the shock from gusts. (I used 3mm shockcord). This is for winter/mountain use - in summer prob I'd not take the extra pegs/guys needed. Guys pulled out tight for emphasis in photos.

I have a SL3, older one without mid pullouts. I want to use this for Snow Camping. I want to put mid pullouts. Where should I put the mid pullouts and any suggestions on how to do this. I am also thinking to sew snow flaps around the bottom. Is this a good mod or not. Necessary, not necessary. Again, if any suggestions on how to do this is appreciated.

nope..whats bowls? It's a game that is played by old men rolling their balls down a lawn.

It's when you roll 'em up hill, the pain gets to you! Mole the second doorway looks good. I see that you'd have problems opening it if youn had a nest installed but I imagine it would be great in summer.

.JPG) Daniel - I put the tie outs 65cm up the mid seam cause it felt 'right' I stitched a 3/4" diameter loop of 1/2" grosgrain, and then across pinned the loop square to the seam then bar tacked the loop vertically to the felled mid seam - seems to work ok - took it out in the wind 10 days ago. Jim - am also considering retro-fitting a rear zipped door to the nest too.

That sounds a good addition to the rear door that you've had put in the tent. It should mean that you can not only get great ventilation when conditions allow, it should help you to cook or just sit at either doorway if crummy weather's about. Looks good...looks very good!

Very multi-functional shelter you now have, Mole. Nice. Heavy as feck though.

Anyone add snow skirts to a SL3? Not needed? Good idea? Opinions?
|
 |
well the snow does get underneath the sl3
|
 |
.JPG) Daniel - you might find info about that if you did a search or asked on Backpacking light .com I'd imagine that you could just pile snow around the edges? I'd not want to add thsnow skirts as they would flap when not covered with snow (or need more pegs). Mike feck off less than 2kg for a custome 2 man 2 door double skin 'mid?

Well in Mole!

I've come up with a new solution to the pole. I carry one pole only, and the one I use was just a couple of inches too short. The top section has a 16mm diameter like most poles. RVops sell a 2 piece bivvy pole with the same mechanism as trekking poles. The thinner section is 16mm. I took the handle off the top section of my trekking pole, carefully removed the 16mm expander from the RVops bivvy pole and fitted it to the top of my trekking pole. Now the 18mm section of the bivvy pole fits on the top of my trekking pole, giving me a 4 piece pole. I just need to mould a new handle from self setting latex and I'm sorted.

I don't use poles, although I've got one or two knocking about the house. Do you find they're much lighter than the Golite pole? Mind you, I shouldn't be so lazy. Could just get off my fat arse and weigh them!

I have a knee that has issues so I need to carry a pole anyway. It's the only reason it's a saving.
