Hi,

I am looking for a rucksack 30-35 litres of good quality.

Price Range is around 40/50 mark. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance

Regards

John

I would look at Lowe Alpine, i think there daysacs are pretty good. I've got a Walkabout 35 and its bombproof. Had it for years.

I also like the Berghaus Freeflow models.

I would consider looking at Ebay. Theres plenty "as new", "used once" and you may get more for your money.

The most important thing in a rucksack is how it carries - this really can be a very personal thing

At this sort of price range, if convenient, you'll do pretty well going into a decent local outdoors store and seeing which ones feel best with a bit of weight in them. There should be a bit of choice.

The current version of trail has a group test which I think was trying to test rucksacks precisely along the lines you're thinking of. It ended up a touch confused overall - they seemingly got sent all sorts of rucksacks which were only vaguely in spec and just tested them all anyway - but maybe some useful ideas.

Really very much trying a rucksack on before buying it.

fit and "carry" are important. up to about 5kg weight anything will probably do. above this fit and carry become more and more improtant as things you don't notice at lighter weights become increasingly and annoyingly apparent.

Ahh excellent.

Thanks for the responses

I am looking currently at the Lowe Alpine Peak Attack 30.

What do people think?

John

Only thing I'd say about that is that is quite heavy (1.6kg from their website). Not an issue if it fits and you're intending to carry decent loads in it (they certainly rate it to carry a lot.). A bit much for a walking day sack though.

Yeah thats 1.6kg, however i was looknig at the freeflow packs from berghaus and the 30+6 weighs in at 1.57kg according to the website.

I might be doing the odd overnight with hte light camping kit. Much like i did with my Enduro 34

Big fan of Deuter myself, they're not the lightest but they handle weight very well and the capacity always seems generously quoted.

Maybe worth a fondle if you see 'em in a shop.

IMO daysac weight is not too important as your not carrying much anyway.

My Lowe Alpine Walkabout 35 Daysack is just under 1.5kg but my Osprey Exos 58 overnighter is 1120grams. I still just take the Lowe on day walks.

Whats been said previously is true, its all about fit and comfort, saying that, every daysack i tried seemed to fit fine.

I can definitely recommend Lowe Alpine and the Peak Attack looks decent enough - there so durable, but maybe sooner than later they'll have to reconsider their designs as the market follows the lighter weights.

How did Lowe make the Peak Attack it soo heavy? I can think of bigger tougher technical 1000D packs lighter then that.

Have a look at the Haglofs Tight or Tight Pro.

L = 30 litres

XL =38 litres

I've got the Tight XL and love the way it fits the back, is deceptively capacious and comfortably carries heavier loads than you think a daypack should be able to. Cinches down flat and close to the body when you've got nothing in it.

The 1.35Kg weight  (for the Tight XL) includes two removable, moldable frame/strut thingies. I never remove 'em because they really help with close fit and load carrying.

Maybe so heavy because its built to carry - as per their website - 13-18kg? So a very chunky back system. I guess you need to be carrying a lot of iron mongery/rope etc to get near that weight!

Their crossvent 35+5 seems to be a rather saner 1.25kg and might well be a better choice for general use. They do also seem to have a couple of minimalist sub 1kg things. The mountain marathon one might be interesting I suppose.

Not sure about totally ignoring weight for day sacs - if you're just out for a day walk then the weight of a 1.5kg+ sac can easily end up being a pointlessly disproprtionate percentage of your overall load. Of course 30-35L is awfully big for a day sac anyway and easy to get a properly light/small thing to complement.

I'd say go for bigger volume: you never know what you'll find on a day out. I'm selling my berghaus 65+10. Interested?

18kg ! Your right, I don't know if you could get that much climbing gear in 30L sack even with 5kg of ropes strapped to the outside. (I think I would be looking another climbing partner as well, one who likes to share...)

I was thinking too many gimmicks...

I bought a Kestrel 38. I returned it after a week, I wore it each day that I had it. I just couldn't get on with it. I adjusted it until the cows came home, trying everything, in vain, alas it just wouldn't sit right, with me.

This is just my personal experience. You may be totally different, in terms of how it fits, of course.

The pack was excellently made, very well thought out with some really strong features, mores the pity that I couldn't get on with it.
