I've never done a trip this long.. wondering if anyone else has done? The route passes a pub in Eskdale Green, a pub in Buttermere, the 'flock-inn' tea room in Rosthwaite and another pub in Patterdale. I'm reckoning on 3000kcals per day. I'll deduct 1000kcals for each of the pubs and the tea room (-4000kcal in total). This still leaves me to carry 14,000kcals! I'll cut that down by deducting breakfast on the day of arrival (-500kcal) and halve the last days food (-1500kcal). I'm still left with having to carry 12,000kcals of food - OMG! Any ideas of what to take?! Any magic things I've not thought of?! I usually have noodles for breakfast (300kcal and very light), cereal bars, chocolate and salami/dried meats thru the day and then "Look what we found" with custard for tea. Not likely to be taking my custard as it weighs 500g per packet Thanks for any tips! Neil.

Porridge with dried fruit and dried milk (portion the mix up in a plastic bag for carrying...put into pan with cold water...bring to boil...its cooked (enough for me). I worked it out as about 500 Kcal per portion. Couscous....carb heavy, light weight. Mini-pasta. with pesto..

Cheers, the porridge with dried fruit and powdered milk sounds good idea - more kcals than noodles and slower release + some protein. Not sure I can stomach couscous.. maybe if I mix it with chilli powder/spices - will have a try before I go though.. Also thinking about those dried shrimps that are so popular in Asia - easy to mix with noodles.

Couscous by itself is...tastless and not very nice at all, so I would always flavour it with something - but then you can always get the ready flavoured versions which work quite well for me. Bit heavy on the salt for my taste...but then I just drink loads with it.

Is your 3000kcal/day based on your experience of real requirements on day walks? If so, fine. If not, take care not to end up carrying loads of food you aren't actually going to eat -- easily done! Breakfasts and snacks: oats are great! Porridge or muesli, flapjack. Also dried fruit, salted nuts, pepperami, all the kind of stuff you can eat little and often. Main meals: pasta (dried) is best in terms of kcal/100g. Mashed potato based meals are tasty. Make sure you take stuff you will actually want to eat when you're tired. If you eat main meals in the pubs, I'd recommend building in an hour's digestion time at least -- personally I find there's nothing worse than trying to get back on the trail too soon after a meal! Same applies to beer too for me.

With you on the beer...I tend to be teetotal when out and about and needing to do more, even the next day....

I've never tried mashed potatoe meals - any ideas of what to add to the instant mash? Going to be making my own flapjacks as that way I can get a decent amount of fat in them! Not going to be drinking much beer or else will probably end up giving in and going to a B&B for the night! lol! Cheers for tips guys!

.jpg) I think some people add pepperami or chorizo or similar to mash or pasta, full of fat and flavour.

Tried making my own flapjacks...and stopped as I could get very good ones from Tresco at 99p a flat...couldnt make them for that and they are 200Kcal a piece (8 pieces per flat). Add what you like to the mash...as long as its tasty (very mature cheddar and ready fried onion...)

.jpg) Neil, I use mash potatoe all the time as I don,t like pasta. I buy the sachets 4 portions which I make do twice.I carry a 200g corned beef which I make do twice or share with a mate,To this I add a thick gravy made with an Oxo cube, total meal about 340g. An alternative to meat is mackrel fillet in tomato sauce 120g or small tuna 80g. Any of these with a pudding to follow is good. Knorr soups made thick with a bag of crisps to thicken it is almost a meal itself, to carry the crisps put a pinhole in the bag to deflate it they crumble ready to use. Cheers ps 340g should read 240g half the meat.

I tried all the theory stuff earlier this year for our 6 day trek in Tasmania. In the end I decided that we couldn't carry enough calories (in the rucksacs we had and weight restrictions for flying out) per day. So we did just fine and came out slightly thinner than we started, no big deal so long as you don't go too fast - give your body fat a chance to kick in. And then the good bit is, you get to eat and drink mountains for a week after .

ahh, corned beef with mash.. I'm liking that.. Knorr soups and crisps sounds good also. Cheers again for tips.. Any ideas for puddings? That custard that you add water to doesn't sound worth bothering with.. I usually take proper custard but it's very heavy for the kcals. I do like a pudding

.jpg) Simon,s instant custard and fig rolls even better when they get squashed in transit. Add a few dried bananas thats been soaked in HOT water whilst you eat the cornbeef mash real yummy. Cheers

Corned beef Potatoes (OK, dried mash) Onions (fried and dried) We're talking corned beef hash, surely. Anyone done this noble dish in the field with any success?

Hmmmm - I tried the matching cals expended with food intake quite a few times and could never manage it....perhaps on longer trips it might bite; but I very seldom do more than 10 days without resupply (perhaps CT might chip...ho, ho, in as I am sure he does)... I find a porridge brekkie, powders (drinking type - carbo) a bar and then a dried evening meal are fine. TBH I often find it hard to eat a big meal (a whole 500-600cals) after a big day out....is this just me? So I guess I do 4-5 day trips on 2000ish cals or less and feel OK for it...each to their own, but it works for me so far..

Oh yes... or instant mash, grated mature cheddar and ready fried onions = cheese and onion bake and (not my reciepe but fantastic) ready to eat dried apricots, cut up and simmered for a few minutes in a little water and brown sugar. Take off heat...cover the apricots with crushed digestive biscuits...serve with custard= apricot crumble and custard
