The issue is his joints and bone development. The GENERAL veterinary advice is to limit exercise for the first 12 months to short walks, gently getting longer. Don't allow pup to jump up onto and down from boulders etc as this CAN damage joints later in life.

At this time of year beware of dehydration as dogs can go down very quickly in very humid conditions.

Feed little and often. Use food as a reward for good behaviour too, that way you will get your basic obedience very quickly.

Training should be little and often and rewarded with praise and play.

As i say this is general advice that I have been given and Im just passing on what worked for me.

All dogs are different and have their own personality.

Visit your vet for specific breed advice on your puppy.

Welcome to the world of the Collie partnership. All the best, hope you and your new companion have many happy years together

Awww Collie pups are far tooo cute!

And far too clever. Given em an inch and they take a mile. Take em for walks and before long they know how to spell. They learn to tell the time. And take up an irreplaceable part of your heart.

You're taking him from a farm in the Lakes to Burnley. What on earth did he do to deserve that?, poor little mite

Reminds me of my foster parents collie.....they were farmers and retired to a cottage...Ben went with them as he was "getting on a bit" (he was 4)!

How long did it take him to work out his new kennel in the garage (where he was to sleep at night) didnt have underfloor heating like the kitchen does.....24 hours.

How long did it take him to work out the living room has underfloor heating and a carpet.... about the day after...

That was 6 years ago.  He now has his own rug beside Foster father's chair....

Sounds about right.

Jake can spell "walk" - mentioning to each other (humans) 'how about a w' gets his attention. That opening the sock draw of an afternoon means Paul is getting ready to take him for a walk.

Both of us getting ready to take him out at a non-standard time, probably means we'll go somewhere other than the park, which means a Big Walk so instead of going into the park gate he'll take us past and down to the river. Rinsing and filling of Sigg water bottles means a Big Walk too and is exciting enough to warrant running into the 'east wing' hall and back into the kitchen.

Humans mentioning the truck to him is very exciting indeed and enough to require two steps backwards in amazement.

A crying human is best helped by sticking ones cold wet nose into their face and snuggling up to them in the hope they will either laugh or give him a cuddle. Either way it Makes Things Better.

Funny critters are Collies!

And when they are gone, for their lives are all too short... well I still remember Tilly - our first dog, and the fun times we had with her. As well as the impression she made on the whole village when she had to have a front leg amputated due to cancer.

Dunno about other breeds but Collies certainly change your life!
