In the Red Squirrel home page it says ""Watch out! Big beasts!"

Is that the midges or the OMers???

My god that is an awful website! I've never been a fan of that place, best location in the world but the sewage pipe out of the plaec above the river makes the river disgusting and the owners have always seemed reluctant to put any of the cash made from the site into investment on the campsite and instead spend it elsewhere in the valley, the toilets are probably the same dump they've been nearly a decade now!

For alternative accommodation, I'd recommend Glencoe Cottages.

We've stayed there for UKC Glencoe picnics for a number of years.

Simple, clean, pleasant.  Mix of bedrooms and bunk rooms.  Closer to the Clachaig than the Dead Squirrel; easy staggering distance.

The cottages at Invercoe were also good, if quite a bit further from the Clachaig (required driving, really).

Thanks cp, I've also used Glencoe Cottages for a couple of Hogmanays and can also recommend them.  However I checked their availability page and it doesn't look like any of the cottages are available for the Saturday of that weekend (two have the Friday free but that probably isn't much use).

Looks like the Dead Squirrel website has been hijacked, doesn't it?

The pictures give a good feel  for the place; lots of signs, white-painted rocks.  I've never felt any urge to stay there, and when visiting people on site have felt very unwelcome.

Oh, BTW, some UKCers once stayed at the Glencoe Bunkhouses.  Enjoy; as someone later commented "This [thread] is like watching a petrol tanker crash; then the driver getting out and lighting a fag."

Aye, that's the bunkhouse I was alluding to!  LOL at the description of the UKC thread!

I've put in for a holiday on the Fri and the Mon so I should be good for this.

I'll def be camped wild one night and then the other night I'll either spend on Invercoe site or a bunkhouse mebbe.

Saturday night bump.  Good to see there's a fair few folk interested.

Heading up to Glencoe tomorrow for a few days, weather not looking great, hope it's better in September!

Right Sandy, that's two nights accounted for, so instead of being the man not in room number 6, are you going to be the man not in his tent on the third night?!

I would love to - Am supposed to be doing the WHW and GGW with my Dad to finish on the 19th...   If I still feel fit I might make it back across before going south again.

If I were you Mole I would just stop in Fort Bill, enjoy the hills round about and head back to Glencoe than do the GGW.

Nice though the idea is to walk from Glasgow to Inverness, for me the GGW was a disappointment with very little in the way of inspiring views especially after the WHW.

Hope you can make it to Glencoe

Thanks TBW - That was my plan - just do the WHW, but Dads mate who was going has got cancer so can't now make it so I sort of felt that I should accompany Dad on week 2 as well now. Maybe try to persuade Dad to do more adventurous stuff week 2.  That's supposing our relationship survives week one - haven't spent longer than a single day in his company since 1988!

Much as I'd love to sell the GGW I can't. Even though I altered my plans to include the Munros at Loch Lochy the trip was still an unintersting slog. I have a friend who did it as a cycle and found it a bit better that way.

Check out what's being said in this thread about it.

There's loads of stuff to do round Fort William and you don't have to be that adventourous. For something off the beaten track you could get the train to Corrour and walk back to Fort William. Check out the Cicerone Guide Ben Nevis & Glen Coe for a few suggestions.

You'll have plenty other company on the WHW so it should make it a wee bit easier. Good luck with it

Aye, I did the GGW as a cycle trip about 10 years ago. Taking 2 days to cover it on a bike was very pleasant, but the idea of 4 or 5 days to walk it wouldn't appeal - not enough variety for my tastes.

Kate/NPC - that's a pity, maybe next time.

By my reckoning over a dozen folk have expressed interest. The more the merrier so please feel free to come along.  Remember these meets are very informal, just turn up in the pub on Friday night, have a chat over a few beers, decide what to do either in small groups or solo if preferred.

For those who would like something a bit more formal Iain Gallagher will hopefully be able to provide scrambling and/or navigation courses and ptc will also be on hand to extoll the virtues of going lightweight.
