Hi, can anyone suggest a suitable light weight portable radio, either wind up or battery powered, priced below £40.00 mainly for use in Scotland. I've searched the internet and there is so much choice its completely thrown me, Any guidance would be appreciated Rob

.JPG) Hi Robert I've been using one of these this summer - it weighs a few ounces , the tuning is good and has a clock/alarm and receives short wave if you are really bored! Not the greatest sound quality - but fine for 'quiet' use. Much better in all respects than the tranny we used to use when I was a lad!

It's still like that in the 21st century? (haven't camped in the Highlands since 93 ) Short Wave roulette it is then!

I've got one of these Casio thingies. Tips the scales at only 24g. I didn't pay $199 for it!

SOme mp3 players have a radio built in, obviously FM only. The sandisk sansa clip being a good example, and within budget, also small and light.

My mobile has a built in radio. You have to carry an additional bit of wire as an antenna.

This is still available - with LW as well, which will work when you are too far away from an FM transmitter.

Many thanks for all the advice, the Roberts Sport R9988 looks favourite at the moment, a little over budget but it ticks all the other boxes. Rob

I bought one of the lidl ones thinking it would be good for travelling in Europe to pick up bbc news etc. After buying it I found out that the bbc world service no longer broadcast on sw to europe I did have a quick trawl through the sw on it but couldn't seem to find anything other than a couple of arabic music stations so I can't see it being much use.

That's a pity about the BBC sw service. The radio does receive FM MW an LW too though, so useful for UK. Mind you, for the Scottish Mountains Arabic music has gotta be better than Jimmy Shan (or his current avatar)!

Can't add to any of the suggested radios, sorry. But... On a solo-wildcamping trip a couple of years back, I took some little radio of my dads with me. God knows what far-off radio station was the only one I managed to pick up, but the crackly horror that barely came over the airwaves somehow added to the experience, and made me feel like I was in the middle of nowhere, days from civilisation. The fact I was within about 1 hours walk of Ambleside is irrelevant Will be watching this thread with interest though, cos a decent little radio is something I'd like too (my mobile has an FM radio on it, but, when I can get an FM signal, it's usually shite stuff being broadcast)

World Service is on Medium Wave in Europe - 648khz. You can often pick up longwave Radio 4 too. For Scotland I would always want something with longwave as FM coverage is terrible. I have a little casio not similar to that suggested by Paddy. It is certainly worth spending a bit of cash sometimes as, notwithstanding comments on another thread about price and brand name, the radios often have more sensitive receivers. Edited for typo etc

what's the likelihood of a mobile phone with built-in DAB radio anytime soon I wonder?

what's the likelihood of a mobile phone with built-in DAB radio anytime soon I wonder? Very unlikely I'm afraid! DAB eats batteries like they're going out of fashion! Even the 'portable kitchen' versions go through 4 c-cells in a couple of hours! Plus DAB reception areas are even worse than FM. Mike
