Leeds Central branch today:

One Montane Featherlite smock on XL in cobalt blue - it's hiding on a shelf with a pile of oddments on the camping odds'n'ends stand near the male outdoor clothes, not on a rail. Got a final reduction but can't 'member how much it was...possibly £39.99 down to £19 and final price £12 but not sure.

A few items of Craghoppers Bear Grylls clothing.

Then you have to go over to the area marked as "gadget" stands near the tills for the rest - plenty of cheap'n'cheerful head torches and LED hand torches. I bought a group shelter like this one for £16. And a Lifeventure trekking towel (last one, sorry) in large at half price.

There a few bits like stuff sacks etc.

Not much in the way of decent clothing for women but a few men's Craghoppers shorts and shirts on the back wall.

Dundee:

Some Patagonia footwear - mostly flip flops.

Decent amount of birkenstock sandals.

Some crocs.

Some teva sandals.

Apart from that relatively empty - no great selection of outdoor clothing yet this year, pretty dismal overall.

And I forgot to put a price! How smart is that?

York - £16 - orange nylon group shelters in a stuffsac / KISUs (and no I don't know what it stands for but I am sure someone does....) Ninja?

Seemed like quite good kit. Aside from that lots of cheap LEDs lights and lanterns, craghoppers stuff

Yes, indeedy.

Karrimor

Instructor

Survival

Unit.

From the days when the 'instructor' i.e. mountain leader, would carry one for his/her group.

Just like the one I linked in to (above).

In the good old days before Karrimor got bought out, several brand words entered the outdoors language - another one is Karrimat. Folk not knowing its etymology have been known to mis-quote it as "carry-mat". Even non-Karrimor mats are still sometimes referred to (by old timers) as Karrimats, like ball point pens are often called "Biros" even when manufactured by Bic.

Leeds Centre, Saturday:

The women's outdoor section was nearly all fashion pap - outdoor???!!! with one exception:

Montane Superfly in burgundy - size 10 but had a size L hanger and was in with the size 14s.

Plenty of decent sunnies; Cebe, Ray Ban, various serious cat 3 & 4 shades etc - average price about £14.99. RRPs claimed to be average £80-90.

I caused mucho confusion whilst teaching some teenagers by refering to the outer layer of material on a tent as a flysheet, not the "outer"

OT

Oh yes, and many (adult and young) folk call the guys "Guide ropes" and Guide Lines".

It's like rough fabric which is chafing and some folk say "Chaffing". They have heard of the word chaff (and similar for guide etc) so they change each word to one that is familiar even when it's wrong.

The KISU for £16 was the following (seen in Aylesbury, Stevenage & Hatfield... yes... I got dragged on the TK tour...!!!)

Trekmates Bothy Bag (Storm Shelter 2-3) for £12-17 depending on what label you find stuck on it! RRP is about £30 and it seems a very usable product to me. Weighed less than the 450g claimed (somewhere between 350-400 in its stuffsack)
