Has anyone spotted any good deals in the sales for Merino base layers? I'm just looking for a couple of T-Shirts.

What online retailers would you recommend I take a look at?

Thanks,

John

Believe it or not Aldi sometimes have merino wool base layers (longjohns and Ts). I have a pair of both (they cost £15 each). They're also pure merino wool, not a fake blend, as they have the woolmark sewn into them. Surprising quality as well!

Chocoloatefishmerino have some really great products (just don't be put off by the crazy website....). They have a few items in the bargain basement for less than 30 quid but sizes are limited.

www.edz.biz also sell merino wool base layers but I have no experience of them. They sometimes have sale items

www.backpackinglight.co.uk also have some merino / polyester blend Ts that look interesting - once again, I have no experience with them (though the customer service at BPL is first rate).

Hope that's a start.

Sportsdirect/field and trek seem to have decent offers on some of their icebreaker stuff at the moment. Unfortunately most of it's on the Womens range (70% of a lot of it in some of the stores I've been in and no products at all in others). I managed to get a SS atlas top in mens at half price though. Strangely their online prices have been more than the instore ones (never seen that before). I've decided their customers just don't know what this product is so won't pay a premium over the unbranded stuff.

The Mountain Factor often has end of lines/last season's colour offers on, and the firm is good to deal with.

I bought one of Blacks own brand TechnicALS ls zip Ts at the weekend, £35 rrp.  It uses MAPP wool, and fits me nicely.  Only worn it a couple of days, so a longer-term test is needed, but signs are good so far.

Good Gear, but...

First Rate? I bought something from them over a week ago & still not arrived & no answer to emails or phone calls...

NOT GOOD!

the weather has been a bit grotty i've heard. strange their communications aren't working. anyone know why?

Mike look on the front page of their website: they explain that they are busy stocktaking and revamping the website and to expect delays in order fulfillment and a lack of response to emails and phone calls. It's just a temporary blip.

Mike, have you seen the message about delays to processing orders and shipping on backpackinglight home page ?

It probably explains why you're not getting a response.

And even if your order has been dealt with, my postie told me they were struggling with a backlog of deliveries due to the weather.  I expect that's the case in a lot of places just now, parcels we've been expecting have taken several days longer than usual to arrive.

Didn't see the previous two posts before I pressed send.

Seconded for the Aldi stuff! I've been wearing their merino base layers in the recent cold weather and it's kept me nice and warm. The only problem is it is very popular and sells out very quickly when they do have it. It was like a mad scrum in my local store the last time they had the merino base layers in and all had been sold within half an hour of the store opening!

Exactly!  It says the 6th, but it's now the 13th - 7 days later!  I want to order something but can't without finding out the postage costs to where I am.  If there's no response in the next couple of days, I'll go elsewhere and give them my custom - BPL obviously don't need the money...

Can highly recommend Chocolate Fish for quality and service.

Not dirt cheap though.

Just heard from mate in NZ that top quality merino is going to be even more expensive as it's in real short supply - a bad summer apparently.  So between that and the lousy exchange rate any "cheap" merino you see out there is going to be utter rubbish.
