"Mislaid" my sunglasses a week or so ago - probably on Blencathra! Any suggestions for a replacement pair Cat 3. Probably around £30 so the pain of losing/abusing is not too great.

Hi again Sand dancer! I have a pair of Julbo sunglasses I got free for joining something. If you e-mail me your address I can send you them. Cost - a donation to MRT. Nodrog.

Very kind of you nodrog - you have mail. Will increase my MRT donations accordingly!

I'm currently using a pair of Aldi CE-marked Cat 3 polarising sunglasses; cost ~£3, iirc. Worth looking out for, as are their multi-lens cycling glasses and 'gloggles'; seem to work fine for skiing.

Like the Captain, I too am using a pair of Aldi's 'best' and they cost me £2.99!!
They're NOT the ones in my photo though!!

Beware cheap sunglasses if you are buying them to protect your eyes. Cheap glasses often have a dark tint. This reduces the light reaching the eyes, so the eyes are actually wider than with no glasses at all. However this also allows more of the harmful UV and IR to enter the eyes. For prolonged use these are worse than wearing no glasses at all. On the other hand some glasses have little or no visible tint at all, but cut out a lot of UV - these are better for the eyes. For prolonged use first priority should be to ensure that UV is cut out, second priority ensure that IR is reduced a bit, and third priority is to get the correct level of visible light. However the only thing you can see when buying glasses is the amount of visible light cut out, but this bears no relationship to the amount of UV cut out. Cheap glasses can often be very dark, because this implies they are cutting out a lot of harmful rays, and they may also have vague statements about cutting out UV. Best to buy those which make specific statements about what level of protection is provided, from a source you can trust.

I thought that's what the cat. rating was supposed to tell you, on a scale of 1-4 how much harmful rays they blocked? 1 being lowest at blocking rays, 4 being highest.

What's wrong with the 'string round the neck' thing. Does no one use this anymore? If not why not, is it because it doesn't "look" cool!! Fer Feck Sake, IMHO, I don't think anyone cares if you look cool or not in the Mtns. I know I don't. I don't care if someone has all the latest, lightest kit. As long as they know what they are "doing" and enjoying the mtns. that's ok.

I also have a pair of Cebes (Spot) cat 3 from TXMaxx for about £15.00, always worth a look.

 > Cheap glasses can often be very dark, because this implies they are cutting out a lot of harmful rays, and they may also have vague statements about cutting out UV. Frankly, I'd hope that a pair of CE-marked glasses that claim to cut 100% of UV will do just that; that's the point of standardised testing, after all. Buy from a reputable retailer (and yes, I'd include Aldi in that...)
