OK, I have a thing about plastic map cases that you can use to strangle yourself with. At least with a laminated map you can mark stuff in felt tip without it moving 2k every time you check the map.

And trekking poles.

OK OK, I don't use my buff on my dog, mainly cos it would get covered in crap and start to smell!

I have used them to wipe off condensation. My point about dog walking was that I don't like wearing scarves, don't like their size and the way they look. the buff is subtle and comfy and keeps my neck warm, therefore keeping me warmer overall than without one. I've found it to be more useful than a hat sometimes. I've also used them as a hat when my normal hat was too warm.

I've a huge fan of buffs, though they don't necessarily have to be branded buffs. Maybe I'm a fan of material neck tubes, whatever, you know what I mean! like hoovers and vacuum cleaners, and tipp ex and correction fluid

I've never worn a hoover round my neck. However, there are people on this thread who think that buffs suck...

So you're admitting to wearing a necklace of correction fluid?

(lol, by the way, at your second statement)

Anyone come across maya dust supposedly for making firelighting easier? Classic overpriced crap if ever there was.

I now make my own char cloth and occasionally boil up vaseline and put cotton wool in it - far cheaper and a sight more effective.

Another nomination - so called packtowels.

Actually maya dust and maya sticks can be collected from the UK. Find finger thick dead branches on pine trees, cut off (neatly) right at the stump and you'll generally find the first few inches are full of resin. They burn very well and are free, just beware than whatever you use to cut and split them will get very sticky and very gooey. The resin smells strong too as its so concentrated!

Now, I like packtowels. They are compact and dry easily. Travelling around for several days/weeks with no laundry with a standard towel leads to a smelly, slimy mess that never manages to dry and is stagnant.

Not so much a gimmick, but extremely annoying:

That tough plastic packaging stuff - impossible to get into it without destroying what's inside.

Grrrr!

i'd say cotwold web service alltogether, usually expensive, very slow at deliverying, dont update on parcel progress, once sent me a womans jumper and man t-shirt in a special buy both offer. and a pair of socks that where both left.. you couldn't make it up. To be fair though, the shop service is much better but dont even bother trying to haggle.

lol at the £30 water bottle, i wonder how many they sold. The most useless item I ever brought was a pair of "lightweight" overtrousers that weighed about 3 KG. so i cut them up to make some light weight knee pads that also never got used.

Ah now, I've got to ask about that one : two socks that were (where ?) both LEFT  ?

What make were they ? I know some makers do make left and right socks (x-socks for one) but surely they're not common.

I've lots of socks that both say "L" on them....

hah.. i've brought socks that have L on left foot and R on right foot a many times, maybe I'm wrong on this and L stands for something else on these but what? The socks I was referring to were Bridgedale.
