you have to dig but there is useful stuff there, the guy called dave does of hunting deer with a catapult in one vid which is some funny stuff.

can you hunt chavs with a catapult? seems like that would be harder than with the traditional 12 bore.
Lee....hunting deer with a catapult in the Uk will put you in jail. Come to that, hunting deer with anything and not holding the required permits...will put you in jail. Chav hunting...on the other hand..

SUL is a bit of a game of oneupmanship in reality <waits for the inevitable....... >
SUL is a game of oneuponeself. never!
What the hell is SUL?....
Its a four wheeled vehicle that is destroying our planet according to Greepeace. Now if you want to really provoke a debate start a thread on global warming! when it comes to food saving tips, the ball is in the bushcrafting park. Just need to take a few herbs and a pinch of salt, the nearest hedgerow provides a 3 course meal, Ive seen Ray Mears do that, all his meal from a hedgerow !!! Funny how he often supplements it with a nicely butchered piece of meat from a quality butcher. Not seen many butchers operating in the wood myself so not really hunting and gathering. Besides he often uses olive oil in his bushcraft cooking. Not seen olives growing in a British woodland. It must be more common down south where he comes from. Perhaps the olive has not spread up beyond the Watford Gap.
Nice to see Simon bringing up his pet hate about the £450 knife. I'm tempted to buy it for him. I'm sure he'd be happy to sell it on for more. Isn't SUL not so much about oneupmandship but about how uncomfortable you can make yourself whilst walking in a foreign country that is generally having more predictable weather than UK. I am sure I went to the website of a US shop selling a lot of UL or SUL gear and they had a display bucket shown on the counter next to the till with balloons in it. Now I wonder what they could be for?

Oooo...a pressy... Thanks TTG

Simon - I reckon I went off on one last week over that bloody knife. It wound me up when a load of ppl were saying its a load of overpriced crap on the thread for someone trying to honestly sell something. It happenes before in other threads where someone offers a nearly new something or other for about 1/3rd off only to be told by about 3-4 different people where to buy the item new for £5 cheaper. Let the buyer find that out IMHO and let anyone with the inclination to spend £450 on a knife decide for themselves. I wonder if it got sold to someone on here. I reckon not unless he said it was an SUL knife with holes drilled in it and the handle cut off.
Yup...think you went off on one too, and, though I followed the thread, I decided not to contribute as I couldn't really add anything one way or the other. One thing does surprise me, though, but then, thinking about it, maybe I should be surprised I'm surprised... I dont understand why people with "special" interests (fancy watches/knives/SUL/bushwhacking/Star Trek/Landrovers/I-cant-think-of-another-one) come here to, what really is a general interest site, to try and sell part of their special interest collection...and be all surprised and hurt when the population here just dont get it...dont understand it...and dont appreciate the intrinsic value....or the craftsmanship...or whatever. Its horses for courses and I just think this is the wrong course and anyone trying to sell a specialist item here has to appreciate that. Oh...gotta go...Star Trek has just started on Five. By the way....what is the point of SUL (apart from making oneself super uncomfortable)
Plenty of SUL gear gets discussed/bought/sold on here. Not everyone wants to lug heavy loads around. Some of us like to be comfortable, and enjoy ourselves.
bloody niche people cluttering the site up. "comfortable". SUL. now i'm getting confused.
Light load. Warm. Dry. Walk all day without feeling shattered.= Comfortable. The 'walk all day' bit was before my cartilage op. Hopefully it will still apply later on this year!

maybe they attach the helium balloons to there pack to bring the feeling of weight down even further.. hey ive just thought up a great SUL product.. *rushing of to patent offices*
He means that knife Mike. I do disagree with him about this site bing for special interest groups. They are all the way through the forum. Let's just see if I can come up with some from the top of my head... Caldera Clone, 6 nations, Julia Bradbury, Windy 1 and 2 (there's some that's special in those threads but I'm not saying in which way), I'm sure there are more threads that have catered to special interests before that I can't recall right now. Then there are those that sell UL gear such as quilts and the like. There are many threads over the years discussing in minute detail the various fuels and type of stoves. I'm sure you could call the stovies who post on here discussing the calorific value or BTU values of meths over gas over whatever a spacial interest sub-group of the general population. There are gear freaks, rugby freaks, blox freaks and just general freaks. In fact most of us fit into one or more special interest group, I know I do.

DOn't be daft Lee. The ballons are for your sleep mat. You blow them up and insert into a sleev thingy to create a ballon campbed. Apparently its lighter than a neo and quite comfortable provided you don't burst any in your sleep. Not warm though because of convection away from you.
Mind you I think filling helium into ballons attached to your rucksack might be a good idea or even better attached to a camp chair so you can be carried along in comfort instead of doing this damm stupid walking business. I mean who came up with the daft idea of walkjing over mountains anyway? Didn't he know there be dragons up there?
Its the adverts...good episode of Star Trek, but I've seen it before. I get your point TTG...but...and this is the but...trying to sell something is a bit different from a straightforward discussion. For instance...a discussion on the merits or otherwise of craftsman made knives against mass market kinves....fine..very happy to join in. Am I going to buy one...Nope. A discussion on SUL - likewise, happy to join in..am I going to go SUL...unlikely. LikeI said...horses and courses

So the guy selling his Quilt on this site should also bugger off? Why is an UL quilt any less of a special interest than a knife? Perhaps those UL tent sales should not be done on this site neither. People have been selling their lasers to get the new scutum I think. Those light tents aren't exactly mainstream neither. What about neo mats? Mainstream? No. Most of camping mats sold are probably the cheapo ones from tescos so by all rights we should only be talking about those. People have been selling all sorts of specialist interest items on this forum without comment before. Take someone selling that lightweight foil to make windshields or caldera clones or the like, not exactly what I would say is mass market item. I wonder why one specialist item is different from another. There are probably quite a few people on this site that also frequent other sites of a more specialist nature. The guy selling this knife said he was offering it at a lower price on here, perhaps he felt more at home here but still had his other interests. Part of what I like about this forum is that it does go onto a wide variety of topics. Bushcraft has also come on this forum over the years (unfortunately the main poster on that was TDG who has disappeared). I do think OM is a broad church and denigrating or censoring one section over another is something I would hope could be avoided. The guy was selling a genuine product at a genuine (if perhaps low) price. Specialist yes but no more than other items successfully sold on here.
