They claim to be able to enjoy there excursions more it they carry 5KG or less.. 5KG, I knew a old woman that carried that about from the shops in a front mesh bag tried to her zimmer frame and she had had a hip replacement (no joke) It gets to a point where it sounds just a bit wimpy, comon i can't be the only one. I've done SUL, all the time when we was kids, we just took a box of matches and a blanket. But surely the point of backpacking (the putting of a pack onto your back) is to enjoy a few extras, the camping experience can be half the fun. fishing, a bit of bushcraft, photography, bird watching. etc. They seem to think its some kind of extreme sport but really its just going for a walk. Dont get me wrong I think every item you take needs careful consideration but please.. take a hike.  If you want to do a extreme bit of hiking, climb a mountain or circuference the globe, now if you did that using SUL principals i'b be well impressed.

hahaha im going to get so flamed for that post, heads I post it, tails I dont...

hhmm 30 views and no daggers yet, might have been more fun posting that at backpacking light . There's more than a few there that would have hunted me down by now, butchered me and using my skin as a ultra lightweight tarp.

No point in feeding such an obvious non-wimpy troll.

Problem you have got Lee...is that most people on here are pretty level headed and are pretty cynical about any extreme  i.e. SUL, over priced watches....stupidly overpriced knives (OK, I know some would say its a work of art, and it may be, but to me its a knife)...errr....and stuff like this

So...I'm not surprised no-one is jumping up and down.

If you really want a reaction, try awakening the Paramo vs Goretex debate

I guess this is a normal place with more regular type backpackers..  have to backtrack my comments a little though, cause Ive had some good idea's of Ultra-lighters.

Lee, Mike knows what he is talking about, but you don't.  "SUL" (super ultra lightweight) is five pounds or less, not the 5 kg or less you think it is.  Under 10lb, which is lighter than 5 kg., is only "ul" (ultra lightweight).

Trolls are just about acceptable.  Ignorant trolls aren't.

Ha I just wander round like a punch drunk heavyweight if i don't have 10kg on my back I must have forgoten something, I am just as knackered and would not worry over a few pounds. I have never really understood the real ultra lightweight debate as myself and most of my friends who wildcamp and indeed most people i meet when out are slackpackers and just enjoy the outdoors for what it is. I don't think most people think every gram is a worry anyway my food weighs more than 5 lbs for 2 days lol.

funny stuff really when you think about it.. sheading half there carrying weight is taking a early morning dump , and they can cut it down even more if the cut there nails and have a shave, but only the hardcore minority of super-ultra-lightweight-supreme-commando's go that far.

when it comes to food saving tips, the ball is in the bushcrafting park. Just need to take a few herbs and a pinch of salt, the nearest hedgerow provides a 3 course meal, Ive seen Ray Mears do that, all his meal from a hedgerow !!!

No Lee Ray Mears runs off to his trailer which follows him around, he is quite a chubby chap and you don't get like that eating a few grubs and some grass. mind you i have no room to talk could last a week or two on my reserves lol.

I liked the link -  a collection of mad-eyed fat Yanks dressing up as soldiers and playing with big knives - hilarious.

We just don't get the class of troll on here that we used to.
