Looking to buy some new trousers soon and am considering the Montane Terra Pant. Does any body have any experience of these? Good ponts ? Bad points? Or are there any others recommended? Paul

They're fab - nice and lightweight, comfy, they dry quickly when they get wet, very hard-wearing - one of my pairs is now 4 years old, with very heavy use from spring to autumn, and they're still going strong. Downside for me is leg length - Montane's 'short' leg length is actually rather long. Though others will see that as an advantage!

Thanks Kate, I'm not that long legged either, but like with most, you have to have what they make !!

Really good pair of trousers, the only point I can think of is that the belt on them sticks in my stomach due to the pressure from my waistbelt on my daysack. And before anyone says it, I haven't got a really big belly........

They are great, ive got a normal pair, an equillibrium pair and a pair of this years dynamic ones. All good things to say....but the belt is crap.

I really like them, light tough and comfortable. Seem to be a good fit for most people. Various pros and cons depending upon your preferences. Zipped pockets, nice big secure zipped pocket inside right pocket to keep things safe, however no rear pockets probably due to using cordura material there. I've heard someone did not like the feel of the knees when walking due to them being Cordura which is a a tough material - does not seem to bother most people though - probably worth trying them first. Zipped vents on thighs for when its warm. Material dries quickly. Adjustable with press studs and zipped at the ankle. Are any other recommended - what will you be using them for and in which season(s) Paul?

Love mine. They look somewhat odd but the design and fit is just great for me. (I have the shorts as well, very nice too)I am 170cm tall (or short..) the medium size is spot on for me. Never had any problems with the Cordura bits (that I am aware of) but I do find them very handy on scrub and for kneeling down on wet soil. BTW, with their jackets (3 of them) I prefer the Large size (for layering)But I love Montane, so I am very biased.Franco

Thanks everyone, I've not seen a pair 'in-the-flesh' so forgive me, I guess i'll want to use them all year round. So, are they any good for summer or too warm - I do warm quickly when active , but tend to cool quick too. I currently have a TNF pair of lightweight summer ones and they seem to have worn very quickly.

I am also on the lookout for some Spring/Summer/Autumn trousers and have narrowed it down to Montane Terra/ Terra Lite and Paramo Merapi (both are around the same price online - £35ish) I wear Paramo Cascadas in the winter - fantastic but far too warm from April to October! Current summer trousers are Buffalo Travelite - no vents but very thin material and they look good down the pub afterwards too which you can't really say about the Montane and Paramo. They dry fast (although I wear lightweight Macpac overtrousers on top in anything more than drizzle). However it seems from a quick Google search that Buffalo no longer make these?? Anyone tried both the Montane Terra and the Paramo?

I prefer the Terra Equilibrium, not as light but better all round IMO. Either pair are really good though.

Be very careful when you wear terra pants, lots of police are piss poor at spelling.

No Buffalo certainly still make the travellites - I got a couple of pairs specially cut for me last summer (standard stuff not really fitting me at all.). What you probably won't do is ever find any in shops. So you'd probably have to get some ordered in somewhere. Terras certainly nice mind. Happily wore them for a bit before getting into trousers that fitted halfway sensibly instead They do seem to have a black/black option which shouldn't look too odd. Definetly summer weight. Would work OK with leggings etc in winter I guess. Or get a pair of the thermics for then. Also various other good looking options from the usual suspects of course. I'd have a pair of Kazoo/Intense pants but they fit me somewhat like 3/4 length shorts

Good decision today - I wore the Terras rather than the Cascadas; haven't worn them since about October and it was really great to be back in them. I'll be wearing mine through til next winter now. I can't wear shorts in the sun and find the Terras are reasonable in terms of me not getting too hot and sweaty.

the terras are possibly the best walking trousers you can get. dry very quickly. thigh vents that work. the terra lites have a very annoying knee seam - gawd knows why you'd think they would be identical to the terras - which i really don't like. the merapi trews. where to start. fabulously comfortable. fabulous fabric. total shite "technical" knee darts that are in the wrong place by a wide margin (look like they're all measured from the top of the leg instead of the bottom or as i choose to belive, the make a huge batch of them and then just cut bits off the legs for the shorter leg version) which again i find uncomfortable. the bloody trews don't NEED any darts in them in the first place. very strange sizing with the lower waist sizes covering a wide range.

Thanks Martin - the Travelites fit me okay in a medium but are a little bit tight on the thighs - the large is however huge and ridiculously long. Think I need to go and try on some Terras in Tiso as I always struggle to get trousers which fit me and my shorter than average legs well. That's one good thing about the Paramos - they come in a short leg length (as do the Terras).

Re Merapi - totally agree with Parky re fabric and comfort - most comfortable summer trousers I have. I also agree that the knee articulation is low but have to say they have never caused me a problem nor made me uncomfortable - so probably best to try first see if they will cause you any problems with comfort or otherwise. I also wonder why they needed any articulation at all - not tight fitting and move well but, as I say they are fine for me.

I have the 'Terra Stretch'. They are quite brilliant. I read that they have been discontinued, though.

I like my Berghaus Cascade pants which are great for winter, spring and autumn, I like wearing my Arcteryx Palisade pants in the summer, light and stretchy enough to make high steps comfortable and mesh lined pockets for ventilation though they are not really needed. The material of both have dwr which can be maintained for some time with careful attention to washing and drying instructions. Both are windproof but breathable, too. I tried Terra pants but found them uncomfortable and gave them away. I have a history of doing that with tried and tested gear that doesn't come up to the mark for me. If you're on a budget, the Craghoppers stretch Kiwis aren't half bad. Just to test them out, I wore a pair of the winter version for the Blacksail meet (they cost me all of £25 in the Craghoppers' sale) and I was impressed with their performance (but a little less with my own). They were comfortable to wear and my legs and arse were never cold in spite of snow, ice and cold winds and before the meet I had noted that they shrug off rain showers with ease.

Oh yes, I almost forgot, the Berghaus Cascades have fine mesh lined zippered thigh vents, too.

I use Montane Terra Lites outwith winter. Nice and cool with the vents open, and no silly clown patches on the knees. No annoying leg seams on mine, but i suppose it depends on your legs.
