Has anyone noticed that the Mountain Vent pull-on seems very long? I normally take a medium in Paramo gear but the medium MV was just too tight around my shoulders, so i had to take a large, which fits fine, but seems very long, rather like a Norgie top. Has anyone else noticed this, and is this the way that the top is supposd to be cut?

Just to add to the many questions that have been asked here already...
It has been mentioned that Paramo clothing will allow water to pass right through it if sufficient force is applied whilst wet - e.g. leaning against a rock or neeling on wet ground. I did think about buying a Paramo jacket a little while ago, but was put off by this behaviour. I generally take a day sack when I go out walking and in the event of heavy rain, I expect that theweight of the bag, under it's straps, would be sufficient to cause the same behaviour - particularly if I was takling it on and off a few times to get sarnies out, etc.
My wife has a Paramo jacket and seems happy with it, although she would be too cold wearing a lambswool sweater on a beach in barbados! She had a problem with the first one she bought which let rain straight through the first time she wore it in the Scottish Highlands. Replacement does wet out externally, but so far doesn't seem to have allowed any water through to the inside.
I actually ended up buying a Mountain Equipment Ogre jacket. Same sort of price range and I'm very happy with it so far - particularly the hood, which is excellent. Even though I'm generally a bit of a sweaty get, I've had no problems at all with condensation.

 Andrew,
Don't worry about that. If you sit in a puddle or river you might get wet. But for general leaning and sitting there is no problem!
|
 |
Andrew- I can second what Andy says. It's not a problem in normal useage. I can happily sit on wet snow without a problem. And rucksack straps are not a problem. I did the West Highland Way in really wet weather with a Paramo jacket and a 20kg sack and had no problems with the straps forcing water through.
|
 |
Having worn mine in some interesting conditions it hasn't let any water in yet due to the sack straps. Even though once it was that wet it was like standing infront of a garden hose.

Well i'm a convert too spent my Christmas money on an Alta II coat, and wore it for the first time last week. We were out in snow, hail, rain and wind and i stayed dry and toasty without feeling like i was in a plastic bag like certain other makes.

well said but why on earth would you want to sit in a river anyway???

To cool off - if you're wearing Gore-tex?
OK everyone - joke, please don't start! ;-)

I will fess up now that I am a Paramo fanboy but I will not burden this already lengthy thread with more than one and a bit of my Paramo anecdotes library. I bought a Paramo smock when I couldn't really afford it. I then discovered that I hated the colour. Emails to Paramo confirmed what I already suspected, you can't dye the fabric without screwing with Nicks physics and ending up wet. So me and my smock didn't get off to a good start. I regretted buying it (on the recommendation of the evangelists at Whally Warm and Dry) Five years later it is the one item of clothing I would grab if my house caught fire. Well, that and a pair of pants. Many many times I have wondered at how I can still be dry and comfortable when I shouldn't be. However, the weirdest story is when I fell into a nest of barbed wire in the pouring rain on Gunnerside. My mate helped me out without any rips to fabric or skin, but a lot of puncture holes in both. He then spent the next couple of hours explaining the several ways in which my jacket would be u/s, and how wet I must be getting. To be honest, I couldn't really say what was going on until I got where we were going and examined both smock and skin. The weird thing was, I hadn't got noticeably wet, and the many pucture holes in the smock were clearly much smaller than they had been. I never bothered to repair it, because it still seemed to keep me dry, and over quite a short time the smock kind of healed itself. Amen Brother! Bear witness! I swear this is true. I just had a quick look at the smock, and I can't find any holes at all. One gripe, just in case St. Nick is still lurking. I do like to be able to furl the smock front into the top pocket in order to cool down. However, it would be nice to be able to fasten it down to stop it flopping about like a pair of really big moobs.

Yawn... Paramo sales falling are they?

Can i just add that paramo just looks a bit naff? What is it with outdoors clothes looking so nasty? there's no reason for it and is lazy designing (not the large square panels on several of the jackets) I am usually pretty cold but refuse to buy param (despite the boyfriend liking it) because it's nasty to look at. I generally use my gear (jackets anyway) on the street as well as the hill so style does play a part (even if it is quite small)... I know you're all thinking it doesn't matter but it does when there is no reason for it. If there is a technical reason for why the colours are always god awful (especially those for girls - like lilac and pink) and the design and fit is strange then i'd love to hear it.

Just an hour ago I took delivery of my first piece of Paramo clothing; a Velez Adventure smock in Fire (Red). Personally, I htink it looks awesome. I'd have loved to get the cobalt blue special edition they did at Christmas, but alas, nowhere had them left in blue. Do they really look that bad? I think they look functional, which in itself, is cool. If the items were designed for the high street, I have no doubts that another brilliant outdoor clothing manufacturer would go the way of The North Face, Henri Lloyd etc...

Of course you can add that Paramo looks a bit naff, but then everyone's entitled to their opinion... Personally I think the Velez and Aspira smocks look pretty good on, as well as working superbly, and the Fuera windproof smock isn't bad either. Hmm, maybe they can make good smocks but poor jacket shapes? But then I've seen the jackets look good on some people too. I'd agree that (some of) the colours are bit suspect though!!

"Can i just add that paramo just looks a bit naff?" And I thought I was shallow I wear my Feura smock for my day to day work. It disnae look in the least "naff". I wear a Velez if it's pishin' doon and nobody's ever said "WTF have you got on there???". The old-style Aspira Jacket, esp in Black & Red, looked great. Fire & Silver just disnae do it for me tho'.

well I have plumped for the brown velez smock cos it was 20quid cheaper than the other colours! Just awaiting its arrival......
