Out at the weekend and downloaded route from GPS onto memory map - to find some bizarre zig-zagging that simply couldn't have happened has been logged. As a "live" track it says we were moving at speeds of above 50kph...something my legs find impossible these days!
Anyone else had this experience? GPS is a Garmin summit..

Was there a hill or something the GPS could have detected a reflected signal from?
It was Beinn a Ghlo - usual highland landscape of heather, hills and sky. Never known anything like it!
What was the range of the zig zags? In the past, my Etrex has lost signal, for no good reason, clear view to sky etc, but when it locked on again, it took a short while to regain the accurate position. (It showed on screen the error, but this may not be recorded in the log.) If it is logging while 'homing in', then it could show an effect similar to what you have seen.
An alternative thought is that you were abducted by aliens.
Re-reading this, I think I should learn some punctuation. Anyway, it's the thought that counts. Standard Monday morning laziness. -- M.

Still sounds like a multipath error, where was the gps at the time, in the rucksack?
If your GPs was erroneously showing your position on Beinn a Ghlo as several miles closer to Pitlochry than it should be, the fault probably lies in the fact that you are a journalist for Trail.
Funnily enough I've never taken the Trail shilling - we stayed at Blair Atholl, being the more sensible approach...
GPS was open to the clear blue sky all the time - two specific occasions when the rather wild zig zags appeared.
i usually get the bizarre zig-zags (??!!!??) at a break. i think that if it loses signal a bit and refinds it say 30m away it thinks you got there under your own steam at 50kmph.
(my legend - set to waas - usually determines i'm 1750-ish km away before it gets itself sorted out - start point somewhere over greenland i think)

I prefer the "abducted by aliens" theory...
Perhaps you were abducted by aliens
 touche :o)
I forgot to mention the spaceship......
..well it's an easy thing to overlook...
you should make sure you have the most up to date version of memory map: from the memory-map 2004 toolbar click Web> Check for Updates... then simply follow the online instructions to get the update. you'll probably need your software license number to do this.

 Fun with Magellan...
Leave last track in Scottish hills in memory, switch off. Go to New York overnight, switch on. Be amazed at the speed it shows you walking the Atlantic!
Incidently, crossed the 45th parallel as we went from the USA into Canada. "Significant Other" can't see what all the fuss is about as I wave the Magellan in front of her. Long explanation follows only to subside in embarresment as pontificating Dick realises half the coach is listening in and nodding as they finally realise what that big sign at the side of the road about the 45th paralell means!
Explain it to a simple starfish please Oh Great Dick
The 45th parallel? It's half way up the globe, between the equator, 0 degrees and the north pole, 90 degrees. It doesn't have the same gravitas as an equatorial crossing or a tropic of cancer/capricorn but it keeps simple souls like me amused!
On US Interstate 93 there was a large sign informing travelers of the fact, along with signs warning of moose crossings and Do Not feed The Bears!
Sandra liked the bear warnings; in the 1970-80's north sea oil exploration business workers were known as bears (amongst other things), so she thought it quite apt for me!
I get the zigzag effect sometimes, I think it happens either a) when you have just turned on your GPS or changed the batteries, b) when you stand still or c) when the signal gets disrupted in some way (trees, gullies, etc). I usually just delete them out of my tracklog, so it looks nicer :-)

Trail think that Blencathra is in the Atlantic (just north-west of Islay) this month - so it could be the Peterborough Effect at work again..
Is your GPS WAAS enabled? If so this feature should be switched off as the service is not yet up and running throughout europe. EGNOS (the european version) will not be operational for some time yet. Having it turned on will cause your GPS to do some rather strange things.
