Following a weekend in Snowdonia, one thing I wouldn't recommend without some sort of water resistent outer would be fleece gloves. I wore some Lowe Alpine fleece gloves in a weekend of torrential rain and they were miserable. Being waterlogged they didn't insulate terribly well and whilst you could wring them out they seemed to saturate again in no time.

I'll never make the mistake of packing the wrong gloves again!

It took me years to get this right...I find lined gloves, whether or not waterproof (and very few are) too thick and inflexible for map reading and getting things out of pockets, etc which is why I now wear outer thin waterproof shell mitts and one or two inner pairs - thinnies or wool or silk or fleece - depending on the time of year and how cold and wet it is.

only to reiterate what's gone before. liner gloves and a shell for maximum flexibility. e.g. for skiing say goodbye to wet gloves.

I have ME Mountain gloves but I find the tips of my fingers tend to get cold - maybe liners would be the answer

I agree Jenny - a pair of micro fleece/silk liners and a waterproof shell for maximum flexibility. I have just bought a Marmot shell mitt from Face west for £20 - will report back on them.

I have to say one of my best buys last year were the Sealskinz gloves, at first there a bit uncomfotable but after a couple of days out they fit really well and are 100% waterproof and pretty breathable.
The only downer is they cost £25

You want the best gloves in the world? Buy a pair of Dachstein mitts, they'll never let you down whatever the conditions. Oh, and at £15-ish they offer the best value for money also.

I got some of the Sealskinz gloves yesterday they really are great, although I did find I needed large, as the medium size was too tight ( I wear a medium fleece glove).

I use fleecy extremities gloves with gore-tex over mitts when it gets a tad damp.

I've started to use ME drilite mitts- warm, windproof and waterproof (thus far). They also have a sticky palm. I haven't needed to use a liner, which means I have to move fast if I have to take them off in the cold. That apart they're great. They cost me £30.

Any info on Outer/liner combinations would be welcome for me too.

Jack Wolfskin have introduced gloves made of Schoeller fabric. I haven't tested them yet and I only found them in Switzerland. At about £45 a throw they're not cheap. They're designed to be a close fit and seem quite warm despite being thin(nish).

For wht it's worth, I use a combination of up to 4 pairs, depending on conditions!! Extremities thin, Outdoor Designs Polartec, MH Winstopper and Extremities Gore Tex XCR shells. I know it sounds ridiculous but works for me, and that's after years of figuring it out!

Try the Buffalo mitts - only £18 pair - work when wet - just ring them out - used on gully winter climbs in the lakes & Ben Nevis with no problems

Has anyone tried or know anything about the Outdoor Designs N2S? I wnated to try some at the Outdoors Show but gloves were off the packing list for all stands except Sealskins. I tried those and found them very tight and clammy. I wnat something windproof and thin with grippy bits so I dont drop my map etc.
Any comments/thoughts chaps/esses?
