They're a bit like these ones we saw on the Eskdale meet last Easter - are they cumulonimbus? I don't really know much about clouds.

Kate, your meteorological ignorance seems to match mine.  Therefore you probably share my ability to alter, but not control, wind direction.  However I pitch a tent relative to wind direction the wind backs or veers and blows directly into the entrance, making life difficult for cooking or sightseeing in heavy weather.

With this in mind I suggest you look at the Robert Saunders Spacepacker Mk.1 for your new tent.  At 1.9k including inner it is on the heavy side by modern standards (though you could reduce this by leaving the inner at home) but the four doors always allow at least one to be sheltered from the wind.

Kate,

when I saw the sign for Cardiff on the M4, I thought (very briefly) of you too! I wonder if that occurred at the same time...

Frum,

here's an idea for the next windy meet: we pitch radially around a big camp fire... that way the wind would have to stop or blow in all directions at once!

Hi there, Frummy

I have had a look at the Spacepacker, but it is over my weight limit (new tent has to be lighter than the Vango tbs micro 100 that I will probably never use now, so it'll be up in the classifieds soon.

It's between Akto, Voyager Superlite and Laser / Comp. Was hoping to pop over to Up & Under to see them after the mri, but work intervened.

Ah, so John, presumably you mean with a lovely glowing Akto in the middle!

You can see them all on my lawn!! Surely you can devise a research trip to Chester before long? I even live on a Roman road.....

Ok, Matt, I'll take that as an invitation. Yes, I could certainly do with a research trip to Chester, haven't been there for years. So I'll come up sometime after I get back from Ireland!

Can we also check the fire-retardant qualities of the different tents?

I would charge for that John, ' cos the rest of you would have the advantage of knowing that the wind would blow directly into my tent.

Hi John, glad to see your launch went off ok

I'm not sure Kate but I think your clouds are strato cumulous.

Think you're right, Ace. Found this picture of strato cumulus on a rather nice French cloud website.

I think that's just asking for trouble.

Did it go a bit like this, Kate?.

'If you come home with me I'll show you what my Excaliber can do'

'Oh yes please, I do fancy a nibble'
